Love Letter - some say it's not good with two, but I personally prefer it with two.

Splendor. You can put the chips in a bag and wrap a rubber band around the cards. One of the most transportable, mid-light weight games I own.

Hive because of its replayability, fast setup and take down, portability (chunky pieces of bakelite) and best of all, toughness (not easy to damage and you can wash them after returning home from your trip).

A Rage deck... we like Schotten Totten and Parade; there are a bunch more you can play.

Games playable with Rage deck (not the CCG) - please add!

We usually bring Emu Ranchers, but I don't think you can buy that anywhere anymore.
We used to bring Forbidden Island in a quart size ziploc, but we overplayed it.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Hive is a great game with infinite re-playability. This is one of my favorite filler games.

Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small, Le Havre: The Inland Port and Patchwork are in similar sized boxes and are good games. I would give the edge to Agricola: ACBS but I have heard it is getting a bit hard to find where Patchwork is available pretty much everywhere. The two player Le Havre can be a bit "mathy" for some people. It definitely isn't hard math but it is a game of numbers.

Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age is a good dice rolling civilization building game that actually feels like a Civ game. The 1st ed. comes in a smaller box than the newest edition; I don't know what the differences are between the two as I have only played the first one. (See my review here: A Wargamer's Perspective Review: Roll Through The Ages)

If you would like to play a light and silly sci-fi wargame then The Awful Green Things From Outer Space is a great game! It is easily found and can be gotten rather cheaply; I got mine of the clearance shelf of my LGS for $5 USD!

I've recently discovered Omen: A Reign of War. The game play is interesting. There's only something like 28 cards in the starting deck, but almost all of them have a unique power. Different versions of the game come with different additional cards. And the box it comes with is only about twice the size of a standard deck of cards.

Penfold: Have you got something clever up your sleeve, DM? Dangermouse: Only my arm, Penfold, and that's no cleverer than the rest of me.

Pandemic: The Cure packs down into the dice bag, if you're in more of a co-operative mood.

I second Love Letter for two players. Definitely light, but it takes up no room, doesn't require too much concentration, and the rounds are quick. Sometimes that's perfect.

Another that I really like (for more portability, I put the base game in the expansion box!)

Valley of the Kings is a fantastic deck builder that also plays with a small footprint (2 airline tray tables).

Race for the Galaxy has amazing gameplay, great replayability and quick play time.

Innovation has a bit of a larger footprint but is worth it for the mind-melting chaos.

Mottainai, also by Crazy Carl, was the most mentioned game in recent 'deepest game in the smallest package' threads. Be prepared for a Steep learning curve though!

You can pack many card based games, like these, in a couple deck boxes.

Patchwork isn't portable, it takes up a ton of table for such a small box game.

It's a great game though.

As for as portable two player games go, nothing beats Hive imo

The small box makes it portable. The OP didn't request small gaming footprint.

Small box. Components could even be dumped into a smaller pouch for easy travel. Great little 2-player game with tons of replay-ability.

I brought PnP versions of Aeon's End (because you've got less than the full content, mostly ) and ABXY (which fits in your wallet. Really) and also Mystic Vale, but it's really too big, and Dark Dealings and Tunhell, who both fit in a deckbox! (each). Look into them

Here's a list of games that my wife and I enjoy. Some are 2-player games, and others are 2-or-more player games.
