I posted this in the play-by-email (PBEM) forum, but I don't think people go there much... I am playtesting a new game, using a PBEM-like approach (actually, we use Slack, which has live messaging and is much better than email). The second game in the series will end soon, and I setting up a third game.
The game is a 5-player wargame-Euro blend, set on a struggling planetary colony. It features resource management, worker placement, simultaneous submission of military orders, and shifting alliances.
Somewhat out-of-date trailer here:
Although the trailer shows the Tabletop Simulator version, the PBEM game is run using a 2D digital version. Slack which allows posting of board updates, instant messaging, and so on. It works quite well and often has a live feel to it, with battles and card draws getting resolved in real time.
The pace of play is roughly one Action per day, with weekends off, with intermittent chatting whenever it suits you.
In terms of weight, the game is about as heavy as Dominant Species or Game of Thrones. Some of the mechanics closely resemble Puerto Rico, but the addition of a military dimension makes the experience very unlike PR.
The rules have been refined during the last two playtests and I am keen to see how the new rules play out. I think the game offers a lot of strategic depth, and would be interested to see what approach people take.
Please PM me if you are interested, or check out kepler03.slack.com
I'm told the Slack link doesn't work. Sorry about that. Just send me a PM if you are interested.
I probably have enough players now, but there are a couple of other folks about who might want a game, so I will probably start another game a few weeks after playtest #3 starts.
Gameplay and balance are improving with each iteration. Thanks to the BGG folk who have already helped out.
Here is what the interface looks like. Slack lets you zoom in on the board, text chat with other players in real time, and so on...
