What prevents anyone from cheating and getting multiple copies of a card in their opening hand?

In casual play: trust and not being jerks.
In tournament: The referee is supposed to valid each first five before the games start.

For casual play, it's really trust with all things-- what keeps a person from having more than 4 cards in Magic, or 1 from the restricted list. What about card mechanics and shuffling? In all games, cheating can happen .

And if your opponent wants to cheat he must pick a card that makes him draw in the first round (Sleight of hand, Adbundance, Mist typhoon, etc.), if he doesn't draw the cheat is easy to spot

You could also keep the duplicated card in hand for turn 2.

Sure you can. In fact, you can have up to 5 copies of the same card if you want .

No. According to the rules, you cannot. Each card in the first 5 must be unique. Also, your deck can have no more than 3 copies of a single card.

But, I suppose, technically you are correct. You COULD bring 5 of the same card. You'd just be cheating :-)
