Henrik and I are preparing to start Day 5 of our Last Blitzkrieg Campaign Game. We will go as soon as Henrik clears an Internet service problem.

Here is a summary of the first 4 Days.

This first image shows the front line in the Ardennes on the morning of 16 December 1943

This image shows the German gains by the end of 16 Dec. Four German Panzer Formations did not jump off on this day. (12SSPz, 150PzBde, 116Pz, LehrPz)

By the end of 17 Dec all German Panaer Formations are moving and Allied lines are penetrated north and south of St Vith. 106ID made a mostly successful hasty withdrawal from the exposed Schnee Eifel position but Allied forces are disorganized by the sudden attack. The German penetration in the north is confined to a narrow corridor. In the south 4 German Panzer Formations concentrate west of Berg Redland.

On 18Dec 2SSPz and 9SSPz move through the positions of 12SSPz and 1SSPz to push the attack toward Spa. 30ID begins to build a defensive position east of Spa and west of Malmedy. South of St. Vith the German Panzers start the drive west to Houfallize and La Roche en Ardenne. 2Pz strikes toward Bastogne but is slowed by stubborn Allied resistance. In the north also, scattered retreating Allied units close the MSR of KGP and they remain stalled north of St Vith.

There are now 5 Allied Infantry divisions engaging the northern flank of the German penetration and 82 Abn is arriving in the area of Manhay and Parker's crossroads. In the south, 101 Abn is arriving at Bastogne. On the southern shoulder Allied reinforcements are stabilizing a front southwest of Echternach and the remnants of 109/28ID continue to hold Ettelbruck.

St. Vith falls but the firming Allied defense limits German gains in the North. 2SSPz and KGP make limited advances but all other German Formations in the north are removing trapped Allied units or going over to the defense.

In the south 5th Panzer Army commander redirects LehrPz and 116Pz to join 2Pz in pushing toward the left flank of the 101Abn. 82Abn has blocked the main roads leading to the northwest so the only way westward is to open the road network south of Houfallize. Loss of the Houfallize bridge may prove critical to slowing the German advance. In the south the epic defense of Ettelbruck by 109/28ID is still blocking 5FJ from clearing a supply line westward.

Interesting replay!

Just one question, as I'm not familiar with the system (I'm starting reading the rules). It seems that reinforcements doesn't arrive from the map borders, right? I mean, 101st airborne Division starts the scenario in an specific position in the map instead of arriving by road coming from the West?

Keep writing please.

Hello Erwin,

Reinforcements most often arrive at map edge locations. However certain Formations arrive at designated on-map locations. In particular, Allied 7Arm, 82Abn, and 101Abn arrive at on map locations. In the case of these three Formations there is some flexibility in the map locations that are allowed and the Allied player has some freedom to decide their entry points.

As Lynn states, reinforcements do arrive at the map edges but a handful of Allied Reinforcements show up on the map due to design reasons:

"Why are Formations showing up where I don’t expect them?

7th Armored Division arrives on 17 Dec
around the St. Vith, Poteau, and Vielsalm
area, following the historical end points
from its trek south following its transfer
from the 9th Army. The need to locate them
into this area is similar to the need to also
bring CCB/9 to St. Vith—the players know
too much. Early on in the design, playtesters
just parked the 7th Armored in front of the
6th Panzer Army spearheads. It’s a smart
move, but it radically changes the flow
of the battle. Here, once the 7th Armored
completes its orders to arrive around the St.
Vith-Poteau-Vielsalm area, it will find itself in
a desperate situation between the German
6th Panzer and 5th Panzer Army, much like
it did in history.

The arrival of the 82nd and 101st Airborne
Divisions is also handled uniquely. This is
more than just trying to set the game on
rails but was also to limit lengthy rules on
the unique strategic movement the two
divisions performed overnight. There were
early rules on temporary truck MA for the
airborne, then a series rule on deep arrival to
city locations. In both cases the Allied player
would, with fore knowledge, conservatively
place them far away from the frontline and
just sit back and let the Germans come to
them. This always caused the Allies to lose the
foot race to Bastogne and have no backstop
to St. Vith. The solution was to have these
airborne divisions arrive at what the Allied
commanders would deem at critical nodes
given their limited intelligence."

Thank you Carl, it's true that it's explained in the specific designer notes. I read them too fast.

20Dec is complete.

The Allied front line has solidified from Hofen to south of Wiltz.

The major German push toward Spa by the SS Panzers of 6 Panzer Army was decisively stopped at Spa and Trois Ponts. KG Peiper is surrounded north of Trois Ponts by 3Arm and major elements of 2SSPz were surrounded just east of Spa.

(We are actually starting 21 Dec today and 2SS was unable to escape from the pocket losing 13 steps in the attempt.)

Both Allied and German forces stalled during 20Dec. Five German and six Allied activations were Fail SNAFU. Four German formations conducted no operations at all on 20 Dec (either Fail SNAFU;No React or Fail SNAFU; React; Fail SNAFU).

The 21 Dec Game Turn will be the last chance for the Germans to achieve a breakthrough before Patton arrives on 22 Dec.

Day 6 (21Dec) is complete. The final positions of Formations are shown in this image.

The German drive toward Spa in the north has been completely stopped. Significant portions of 2SSPz are surrounded east of Spa and the division lost 13 steps this day and did not open the road. In addition KGP is surrounded north of Trois Ponts and will not survive the next day. All attempts to reach and extract KGP failed this turn.

The Allies are holding a solid front from the northern map edge to just south of Bastogne. Remnants of 150PzBde are pocketed south of Vielsalm.

The only remaining successful offensive advance occured north and south of Wiltz and the front is broken from south of Bastogne to Ettelbruck.

However, next turn Patton arrives on the south map edge with 4 Formations.

At this point the Germans hold 4 Axis VP hexes and the Allies hold 7 Allied VP hexes. To avoid a loss the Germans must take (and hold until 26Dec) 3 more German VP hexes. OR Take (and hold until the end of the game) 3 more Allied VP hexes while maintaining control of the 4 Axis VP hexes until 26Dec.

I have conceded the victory to the Allies. Congratulations Henrik.

A big motivation for stopping now is our desire to run another full campaign. This time Henrik will be the German player and we will use no optional rules. Furthermore we will play with all the BCS 1.1 revised rules.
