Is it possible to
1) play units special ability during action phase
2) use units STRENGTH during combat phase
Sounds kind of logic. What confuses me - unit special abilities are not allowed to play in combat.

You can use unit special abilities in combat. See, for example, Darnati Warrior, whose ability is triggered by playing him in combat. There is really no other way to play him.

You can't use unit Actions in combat. See, for example, the Latari Elf Storm Sorceress. If you use the unit for an Action, it is no longer available for combat that turn. (Likewise if you use it for combat, it can't be played for an Action until it is returned to your hand.)

Yes, but only if the ability say "Action:" at the beginning. For example, the Storm Sorceress card has an Action ability.

On the other hand, "When Played:" abilities are not Action abilities and can only be triggered in combat. 90% of the abilities in this game are When Played abilities.

That's pretty much the only time to use a unit's strength.
