I've been told I need to make a birthday/christmas gift list for myself. Thinking of putting some games on the list, thought I would get some more ideas, make it more of a surprise whatever I get.
The people buying these games are not gamers, so it is important that the games be easy enough for someone to find without much knowledge of it. Ie. They can go to a reputable UK website and order it without fuss for not too much money.

I like light to medium games, but am looking for something to fill a longer time slot. thinking 45 to 120 mins. A lot of my games (that I can get to the table) are fun and light but can be over very quick.

As for what kind of game. I am thinking multipurpose. I play mostly 2p with gf who can handle more strategy, but also with friends and family who are better with lighter games. We play Alhambra sometimes, which is probably a good standard for the kind of length and complexity I fancy, perhaps could go a bit longer or heavier than this

Also looking for theme. something we can get into and have fun with, nothing dry and boring. usual geek staples for theme are good. scifi fantasy history science

Had some ideas. Please tell me what you think or suggest your own
Roll for the Galaxy
Champions of Midgard
Lords of Waterdeep
Pathfinder (maybe one for me and the gf only, assuming it works well 2p)

Thanks guys

Ryan Laukat's games generally toe that line -- they're lighter and have gorgeous artwork, but also take longer. Islebound is the one I'm most familiar with.

Talisman (Revised 4th Edition) or Relic if you're more into the 40k universe than generic fantasy.

Light, thematic, and long. Maybe a little too long.

Lords of Waterdeep with Soundrels of Skullport expansion is the first thing that came to mind.

Ticket to Ride with 1910 expansion or the anniversary edition would be good, too.

You should also be able to find Peloponnes which, together with Peloponnes Box will give you great flexibility, length and ability to play with few or many (up to 8).

Also a favourite is Viticulture Essential Edition which is more of a medium weight game, but also, I think, fits the bill for you.

Happy birthday!

Roll for the Galaxy is a fine game (one of my favorites), but I'm not sure it's likely to go as long as you'd like. It's based on Race for the Galaxy and it's still very much a "race", I couldn't see it going over an hour. Haven't played the rest that you mention.

i would imagine most, if not all games are available via Amazon.com in the UK.

Here's my recommendations

Abyss - Recommended with 3+ players
Lanterns: The Harvest Festival - Recommended with 3+ players
Tiny Epic Kingdoms - Recommended with 3+ players

The Castles of Burgundy- 2-4 player game, supposed to be really good with 2 players too.
Five Tribes - 2-4 player game, supposed to be really good with 2 players too.

Targi - 2 player only

1775: Rebellion. Plays two, three or four well. Simple rules, team play, runs about 90 minutes. Great historical flavor. Its sisters 1812: The Invasion of Canada and 1754: Conquest – The French and Indian War are both good candidates as well, although 1754 isn't out yet. All three have the same basic running gear, with variations for each title.

Lords of Waterdeep certainly seems to fit the bill (though I don't find it very satisfying with just two players).

Airlines Europe could work, though maybe not thematic enough, and I don't know how it plays with two.

Or since I see a few coops in your collection, how about Ghost Stories?

What? His requests were light, thematic, and not dry. CoB is none of those.

Yeah, but he's right. Castles of Bergundy is more of a bony dry Riesling. I wouldn't recommend it as a light thematic game.

My recommendation was for him to not play Castles of Burgundy.

Well, you like Forbidden Island, so how about Pandemic?

Legends of Andor, on your wishlist, is not too hard to learn, plays longer, and is very thematic for a euro.

Also, ++Islebound

Small World and Lords of Waterdeep both appear to be reasonable selections that meet your criteria: 60-90 minutes (shorter with 2P), thematic, and low complexity, as well as easily available.

The game you want is:
K2

Although 1775: Rebellion is more fun!

A slightly heavier title that would be great is:
Snowdonia

I like theme and just a little different from those suggested already, we love Galaxy Trucker and Mission: Red Planet which are a little different.

We also like The Downfall of Pompeii and Survive: Escape from Atlantis! even thought they're a little simple but we have great fun when playing with my daughter

Personally, I find lords of waterdeep really boring

Oh and if you like carcassonnish games - you might like Isle of Skye: From Chieftain to King

In the Name of Odin is a recent release that really fits what you are looking for. If you have an interest in co-ops Dead Men Tell No Tales is very thematic and fun as well.
