I have both base games, doorways into darkness and the caverns of cynder sets. I also just bought the frontier town expansion. I recently read post saying that some of he expansions fix some of the bottlenecking problems etc.

My question is which ones are essential for improving gameplay and are there any good variants/house rules out there that fix some of the commonly cited issues.

Thank you

Many of the expansion monsters have abilities that make bottlenecking a less ideal strategy.
The bandits from frontier town will help, since they're ranged.

I would advise that you look into some of the "deluxe" enemy packs. They all add a lot to gameplay.
And, the trederra other world is great.
I haven't visited the world itself yet, bit I've seen some of the mine rooms and the darkness cards from it, and theyre all quality. And I hear trederra itself is very unforgiving of heroes clustering at a doorway.

Get the sets with the spellcaster Enemies (Void Sorcs and Sepentment) and get some Bosses too (especially Be'lial if you have already have Cynder).

I also can't recommend Trederra enough.

I hear a lot of recommendations for the Serpentmen, but I don't know why yet. Anyone care to explain?

Because one of them is a Serpmentman Shaman (spellcaster). They also make Jargono feel complete.

They're one of those deluxe packs I was talking about.
They come with missions and some other cards.
Additionally they are a great combo of melee enemies and magic users.
On top of all that, they have 6 different tribes of serpentmen (much like the infamous bandit gangs).
And, if that wasn't enough, there's an epic version of the serpentman spellcaster.

Pretty comprehensive, but I would also include that the Serpentmen Warriors are fun, challenging enemies who can both take the damage and dish it out. Additionally, they move through other models, so trying to bottleneck is useless against them. Finally, they're very common Enemies in Jargono and the Swamps feel incomplete without their many Enemy and Encounter cards.

Have they released their retail schedule at all? I didn't get any of the adventure packs and I am curious what they are going to be like.

Yes, but that doesn't stop me from wanting the extra yummy Trederra goodness!
