Well this confirms one important thing... the game system has bugger all to do with Betrayal at Calth. I see they are sticking with the £95 price tag from Calth though; that isn't surprising.

Good find.

Boardgame Geeks, prepare yourselves for another miniatures feeding frenzy.

We survived the last two, we can survive this!

What? That evil gleam in my eye? No, I most certainly am NOT plotting how to get my "sweaty hands" on those Custodian Guard and Sisters of Silence minis; boardgame be damned! For Geek's sake, what kind of boardgamer do you think I am?

Too bad it doesn't appear to be based on the Calth system (though I guess we don't know 100% about compatibility at this point). This makes me wonder though...if they DO end up releasing another Warhammer Quest game after Silver Tower as rumoured, will it even use the same ruleset? So far none of their boxed games have had the same rules!

If the system is as good as or better than HH:BaC I will pick it up.

If it isn't, it will be an easy pass.

I don't expect much compatibility from this picture. For a start, the boards aren't hexes, and it appears to be using D8s. Psychic powers have been developed into their own sub-system (which isn't surprising considering the setting). I wouldn't be surprised to see some White Dwarf content for using the models in Calth though - and access to additional figures makes it easier to use the points system from the September issue of White Dwarf for people who don't already have lots of marines kicking around.

As for Quest... There is a chance new games may have different rules; I hadn't really thought of that. However, I think we'll be okay. The rumours talk about expanding the system, not creating new ones, and Quest is the only game so far that they have already released additional content for, which does suggest that's the direction they intend to follow. Besides, these 30K/40K board games don't have the same fan base as Warhammer Quest* which gives them the scope to test out new ideas. For Quest, I expect them to keep the same core rules, and use the settings to provide the variety.

* And to clarify, I mean for the game part. I'm not talking about those sweet custodes.

Saw this picture on BoLS today and was blown away with the quality of the custodian. I am a gamer more than a hobbyist, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited about these miniatures:

Nothing is chaos on Prospero. It's a civil war, with the Emperor sending Space Wolves, Custodians (Emperor's elite guards), and Sisters of Silence (psychic nulls) to teach the Thousand Sons (Magnus's dudes) a lesson for their use of psychic powers.

The game has 5 Thousand Sons Termies, 5 Custodes, and 5 Sisters of Silence, then there are 30 legion veterans (rank and file) to divide up between the two teams somehow. There is a named leader for each side as well. Looks like the game comes with plenty of weapon options, with the choice to fit the models out however you like (as in Calth).

For you boardgamers who don't build models as a hobby, those densely packed sprues are intimidating, even for those of us who do. LOT'S of dang things to glue together. So, don't think this is something only experience modelers can do. We're scared, too!

Not anymore it's not! Luckily I caught it earlier. Everything looks beautiful, and they have maintained the graphic design and aesthetic from Calth, which is a good thing.

Ha ha. Yes. Good call mentioning that, I know people have gone into fits in the past over seeing a price in the wrong currency.

Everyone should watch the video on that page. It's really, really interesting.

So... what have we got compared to Calth...

Grid-based (rather than hex-based)tactical street-fighting , in environments that are slightly more open than Calth.

Very asymmetric forces, with Thousand Sons having a dedicated psychic phase and 5 schools of psychic powers to dip into, while the Wolves and Co. have the edge in a straight fight.

6 scenarios telling the full story of the event, similar to the format we saw in Calth.

D6, D8, D10, and D12 to reflect the power of the weapons and combatants.

Opposed dice rolling rather than roll to attack and roll to defend. You pool your dice of different types, and then dice off, and for each dice the attacker rolls that beats an opposing defence dice, the defenders takes a hit. This seems to combine the rules for Terminator Genisys and Dungeon Saga. I am thoroughly bummed out, because I have been on and off developing a "duelling system" for a game I will never design which is based on the same concept.

Slightly more variety in units - you still get 30 grunts, 5 termies, and 2 named heroes, but you lose a "big" model like Calth's dread, and gain 5 custodes and 5 sisters. That's a fair trade.

Models look like a bastard to assemble, and as with Calth there is no "fixed" loadout. You are free to build the models with the weapons you want... prepare for analysis paralysis long before you ever roll a dice.

Crazy card sizes, which are now the standard for all GW releases. They need to consider releasing their own brand of card sleeves for the folks that want them.

Hmm... Seems to have a Calth-like system of consolidating models into fighting units, so you can have a mixed bag of fighters in the same zone rather than having regimented unit structures.

Quite a lot of punch-out overlays for the board. A whole punchboard with crumbling pillars, statues, etc. Looks like the idea is to reflect how the city becomes more damaged as the battle goes on and you advance through the scenarios.

Well, as if there was any doubt, I put my preorder in. Got it for £76 delivered, which I'm very happy with. I am hoping this might be a refined version of Calth, which is amazing but offers very little scope for creating new units because of the compact rules and the vast difference even a single point of armour makes.

If you haven't yet and have the time and interest, I recommend watching the developers' video at the link above. They spend 30 minutes discussing the game and its fluff and maybe 30 seconds talking about 'oh, you also get really awesome miniatures'. I know they're the designers for the rules but the fact they got this much air time makes me hopeful about the game itself.

I thought exactly the same thing. Like I said above, it's a really, really interesting video. They talk a lot about the history of the setting, and you can tell they are passionate about it; but they also talk a lot about the actual game. There's only three or four porn shots of the miniatures. It was very unexpected that they focused so much on gameplay and setting compared to miniatures, and that really makes me happy.

More and more, Games Workshop sound like an actual games company again.

Watched the developers video and whilst I'm disappointed that they are not using the Calth rules it's hard not to be impressed by the energy GW have poured into producing new rules sets they think are appropriate for the story they are trying to tell. I can see that potentially this means that any one set is unlikely to damage 40K whilst still allowing them to explore streamlined systems for operating within that universe. What I'm not sure of is where this takes us in the long run? I quite like the diversity we have seen so far but I'm not sure how many systems I can buy into.

After watching the video, I decided not to buy this game -- I was not too impressed with the opposed rolling mechanic, at least not the way they implemented it. I think it might end up being a fine game, but would rather spend those valuable gaming dollars on a system that I think I will enjoy more.

Not to disparage those who are excited about it. I am very glad they did the video, though! It saved me from buying the game blind. Cheers!
