After having played 'Survive: Escape from Atlantis' a few times my family decided to try something new so I applied the 'Treasure Island Variant' (https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1149867/treasure-island-var...) with a few modifications.
We placed all of our meeples just like in the regular game.
Any 'pirate' on a mountain space can dig one treasure per round.
I can't imagine ever playing the vanilla version again!
The 'Pirate Variant' added a new level of strategy and the consequences of your actions, including the loss of treasure from a whale attack, made every round's decisions that much more enjoyable. It is one thing to destroy a ship and eat meeples with a Sea Monster. It is so much more enjoyable to sink a ship, eat a couple of pirates, and sink someones treasure they spent a couple of actioning mining from the mountains to the bottom of the ocean.
I highly recommend trying this variant!
