I am pleased to report that the inaugural meeting of the newly designated South Arlington Gamers was a success. Four members of the BGG Community met at the brand-spankin' new Borders Bookstore located in the equally new Arlington Highlands, a very different collection of retail establishments.
The participants were Greg (chezzilla), Stephen (Apocryphile), Alan (chargetheguns) and yours truly, Mike (Gamegrunt).
Before Alan arrived the three of us played a game of Greg's Giza.

This is the type of game that will tend to favor the player who is largely ignored by the other players as they gleefully disrupt each other's development. Stephen was left alone for the most part so he won the game handily, 27 - 21 - 6 (if memory serves, this is about right.)
Next we began the process of learning to play Stephen's Gloria Mundi.

This is a race game with a theme set in the period of decline that was the late Roman Empire. Players attempt to be the first one to get out of the Italian Peninsula (starting in Rome and moving south) and eventually reach Carthage. A player reaching Carthage ends the game, but there are other game ending devices, including the Goth figurine reaching Rome from the northern part of the peninsula.
The game was barely completed by 10:00 PM, the time our Borders closes. Alan enjoyed a comfortable lead for much of the game but I began to nip at his heals. Near the end we were neck and neck with both of us reaching Carthage on Alan's turn. The tie-breaker in this game is number of resource items each player has remaining. The final count found Alan with 13 resources and I with 14...an exceedingly close outcome!
Stephen and I opted to visit the new Brewhouse Restaurant "across the street" from Borders and continue the game meeting while Alan and Greg headed for home. I introduced Stephen to Atlanteon http://boardgamegeek.com/game/216 and he briefed me on Dracula http://boardgamegeek.com/game/7804
After a couple rounds of Atlanteon - two rounds constitutes a game with colors being alternated in this Knizia abstract (I won both rounds winning the game. I placed 11 control markers in the first and captured all three towers in the second. Stephen struggled with seeing the patterns of this game, but I expect our next contest will be more competitive.)
We finished with Stephen explaining Dracula, and I look forward to playing this one next week.
Regards to all,
Gg
