I like elephants. I like how they swing through trees.

In the rules it describes the available slots... I'm a little confused about the 2 hand and 2 arcane slots. It's probably just the use of the plural of "slots" in the picture (on page 11) that is throwing me off. What I would assume is that each thing has just one slot, and that you don't have 2 slots each for the 2 hand/arcane cards. So there are 7 possible slots altogether, not 9. Right?

1. ally
2. accessory
3. body
4. 1 hand
5. 2 hand
6. 1 arcane
7. 2 arcane

There are two (2) hand slots, allowing you two one-hand items *or* one two-hand item.

Same with arcane slots.

The icons show *how many slots* that asset card takes.

From the rules:
"The slots available to an investigator
are:
= = 1 ally slot, 1 body slot, 1 accessory slot,
2 hand slots, and 2 arcane slots.

The icons below indicate that an asset counts against an
investigator’s capacity. If an asset has no slot symbols on it, it does not take up any slots."

Gotcha. So essentially you have 5-7 total slots, it's just a question of whether you are holding a 1 or 2 hand/arcane card at the time, or possibly two each of 1 hand/arcane cards.

Overthinking it, I fear.

Very simple: as Bob says, and as common sense dictates, you have 2 hand slots. One per hand. And some things fill up one slot; and others two.

I am amazed that this is problematic. But I know that ymmv.

I don't think so. The thing is, I've played a ton of Arkham Horror, the board game, and you have the similar 2 hand limit, but you can have extra cards with whatever hand counts as long as you don't use more than 2 hands at a time. So I assumed from the way the rules are written here that maybe you can hold a 1 hander and a 2 hander in their respective slots, but could only use one or the other. It makes sense as Bob explained, and I get it now, but I don't know that it's crystal clear as written. And of course, a normal person only has 2 hands, but it's a little murkier with the arcane thing, where it seemed like maybe you could have a 1 power arcane spell, and a 2 power arcane spell.
