I've been a huge FFG fan for years, but just got into X-Wing this past summer. Not a big fan of the tournament scene, prefer to play just vs friends and family. Couldn't help myself and just bought 1 of everything that was on the MiniatureMarket sale this week (about 70% of the whole X-Wing collection, I believe), and am looking at storage options, as this many ships obviously won't fit in the core box

What recommendations do you guys have for someone that just plans on getting 1 of each ship (and probably not the epic ships at this point...)

I've seen tons of recommendations for the Plano 1374, but was wondering if I need something that large (and expensive) if I don't get two of any ships. Any slightly smaller Plano series boxes that would work for a "one of everything" collector?

If I were starting from scratch I would go to the hardware store or the craft store and buy a couple of those stacking screw/nail/whatever organizers that allow you to move compartments around, which run anywhere from $7-$40. When you open your ship boxes up, hang on to the little molded plastic "nests" they come in. Use an X-acto knife to cut them out and put them in each compartment. It probably doesn't look as "International Assassin" cool as the black foam Plano cases but it's a cheap and fairly effective solution. If I get a chance I will try to post a picture of my half-assed version of this (I did not think about saving the plastic nests until it was too late).

Expensive? I think I got my Plano 1374 for $20 at either Walmart or some sports shop. If going to an outdoors or sports shop, look for those rare and crazy coupons that can really help you out.

For what it's worth, I've got my thread on storage here. It heavily involves a Plano 1374.

Also, you might want to go with more than just 1 of some ships. Tie Fighters are a perfect example. The most common ships I tend to have a few of. OK...I admit I have way to many of some ships.

Cheapest I can find Plano 1374 right now is $49 at Walmart.com

Reason why I'm only buying one of each is that I'm a completionist, not to be competitive at all... plus, it makes variety in your choice of ships when you can only choose one of each model

I have found that these Stanley Organizers feel like they were designed specifically with X-Wing in mind. There are two different ones that you could get.

The 25-Compartment organizer is perfect for cards, tokens, and small ships:

https://smile.amazon.com/Stanley-25-Removable-Compartment-Pr...

And the 10-Compartment organizer is perfect for large ships:

https://smile.amazon.com/Stanley-Removable-Compartment-Profe...

I currently have two 10-compartment organizes for all of my large ships; and six 25-compartment organizers for everything else:
-Two for 'general' items - cards, tokens, dice, pegs+bases, templates, etc.
-One for each faction (ships, tokens, dials)
-One that houses all 'Force Awakens' stuff

Ah. A young padawan asks about storage. Welcome.

The real question is - do you need to carry your collection everywhere?

Answering that question will help. I used to have multiple planos and bags and card sleeve binders. But then I found I was usually playing at home or just taking a few ships with me.

Now, my ships are all on display (which is awesome) and I have a small travel bag

Not everywhere. Sometimes the occasional road trip to see family/friends out-of-town (my hometown buddy really likes both X-Wing and Armada) or to another local gamer's house for game nights.

Definitely not going to be taking it to conventions or long trips, so I don't need anything too flashy or overly protective (no need for foam packaging...) Just something basic to carry and organize everything to make setting up games easier. I probably won't use sleeve binders, as I prefer tuckboxes for storing cards (and like to make my own using an online tuck box generator)

I'm mainly a huge Descent 2E and Imperial Assault fan, and have used Stanley toolboxes to carry all my Descent and IA gear, and was looking to something similar for X-Wing.

I do like those organizers, but how do you carry all the individual organizers? I didn't see any other Stanley products that those would fit into to carry them all at once...

Harbor freight also has some that are a little cheaper, 8 bin instead of the Stanley 10 bin, http://m.harborfreight.com/8-bin-portable-parts-storage-case....
Instead of the 25 bin, they have a 20 bin, http://m.harborfreight.com/20-bin-medium-portable-parts-stor....

I use 2 of the 8 bin for epic ships and ghost and decimator, and about 4 of the 20 bin for the ships and tokens and stuff. They go on sale all the time, and you can get coupons almost every other week.

Same question as I asked before... these are nice, but if you need 4-6 of these, how do you carry the 4-6 storage containers?

This is the Home Depot version of the stanley organizers:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-15-Compartment-Interlocking-O...

They actually attach together. For example I have 4 of them to hold Heroscape figures.

I don't use these for Xwing but I don't see any reason they wouldn't work for that.

I use the Plano 3700 series tackle bags that I found at Walmart. These hold 4 Plano 3750 containers plus stuff in the side pockets.

A local player carries them in a large rolling suitcase (2 stacks side-by-side). Otherwise you just take a few trips if you need to bring them all in. If you sort by faction, you may not need to bring them all at the same time.

I actually bought the $3 tarp bag from ikea and it holds 4 of them with space on the side for some extra stuff. I run xwing events, so bring all my stuff, but when I go to tournaments myself, I just take what I need. For the playmats, I found a blueprint holder made out of pvc pipe with a handle, it holds three rolled up really well. I also have all the cards in card sleeves and two binders.

Hmmm...maybe the prices did go up? I'd recommend checking whatever sports/outdoors store there is around you and see if they ever have those rare 40% coupons. Then, head in and buy the Plano there.

Take a look at the Plano 5231. It's the default storage for lots of X-wing players. I have multiples of everything except some of the large ships and I can still fit most of it in these cases. I have one for each faction. You can easily store all the tokens and dice you need for each player in the top. I couldn't get the Ghost to fit, but everything else outside of epic works great. I can put all three cases in a duffel bag if I want to bring everything with me.

You could also just buy Plano cases and put them in a big duffel bag. That's not a bad option and you can just get a bigger bag when you need to.

The Plano 3700 series is large enough for the epic ships and for the large based ships. I also use Sir Willis' large tuck boxes for the large based ships and then fit them in a 3700 tray. I might have just hit my limit with the current tray, though.
