Maybe if you lived in the same state as the GMT warehouse like Arthur...

Touched down here in central Kentucky as well... I knew it charged, but did not expect it to ship/arrive so quickly.

A most attractive package. I was a fan of the first edition, but am quite taken with the box design/components of the deluxe edition (the blue box is rather sublime). Job well done all around... although the back of the box still indicates "2-4 players", which does not therefore credit the inclusion of the solitaire rules.

I also managed to overlook canceling my original P500 of the mounted mapboard once the deluxe edition was announced, and so now have a version "1.5" of the first edition. I may well gift it to some friends/colleagues who were once employed as archaeologists in the Marshall Islands.

Heh... Yeah my P500s tend to show up quickly. I'm within 3 - 4 hours drive so UPS tends to end up delivering next day.

Well done on the 2e Kevin! Going to play with my kids.

Purple Die?
Just had my copy arrive today. It all looks great (with one exception). Once the kids go to bed I'll be punching and sorting pieces. I can't wait to play on the mounted map board - and now all the different player tokens are easily distinguishable from each other.

However...there is one minor negative. I really do not like the purple wooden die compared to the old yellow-green speckled plastic die. I will certainly be moving my 1st edition die into my 2nd edition game. I still have an extra shrink-wrapped copy of the 1st edition...the question is...do I break the shrink just to scavenge that die as well?

Nope. Usually my first notification is when it hits my porch.

Explorer Stands
I'm looking through the rules and the Components list lists, and para 2.3 references,

"4 plastic Explorer Stands"

My 2d edition didn't come with any and a quick scan of the 2d edition pictures posted here doesn't appear to show any.

Did they not ship??

Kevin posted about this a few days ago.

Short story: stands are NOT included.

Longer story: they were originally going to be posted but Kevin's family (IIRC) never used them and everybody decided they really weren't needed. But the rules didn't get changed to reflect that.

Actually, Gene's family (the G in GMT). They were especially annoyed by the way the stands covered the explorer names. And they prefer to use the Explorer counters flat. So I was convinced to leave the stands out. But then nobody took the references out of the rules. My bad. I think the cost was a consideration, too. It's surprisingly expensive to toss a different item into the box- not the cost of the stands themselves, but the handling involved in getting them included.

Mine arrived while I was out of town. After greeting my wife and the Great Dane duo (they will not be denied their Dad time) the first thing I did was open my new copy. So much goodness! This will make winter much more fun.

Any insight on why Retreating units are now placed face up on the nearest friendly island (para 8.3) compared to face down in the 1st edition?

When are they flipped face down per para 7.5?

It was always meant to be face up. Another little penalty for losing a battle.

During the owner's Movement (after Transit). See 7.3, first paragraph.

In practice, it really doesn't matter. All units are revealed to everyone during battle, so all you have to do is remember what was in each player's stack after the Battle, and see where it goes. They will still be there until after that player's next Movement step.

Mine was on the doorstep yesterday, and my main gaming buddy and I are really excited about it! The components are excellent, and the designer's notes show a detailed interest in the history behind the game. I've learned quite a bit from them, which is a huge plus for a history buff.

I can't wait to play it with my buddy! She is clever, unpredictable without being foolish, and is very likely to make my best ideas come to grief. A good opponent, and it looks like a game that will feed our strong and weak aspects. I can't wait to get this to the table.

I'll likely play it solitaire this weekend to try to gain an advantage. That hasn't helped me much in the past, but....
