Thanks everybody for all your great questions! It was really fun answering them and chatting with you.

I'm nominating my friend Odd Hackwelder, who is an incredibly creative game designer and a great friend. I'll let him introduce himself:

Yellow,
It's truly an honor to be nominated as geek of the week.
Thank You, JR!
Please ask me as many questions as you want.
If you take the time to ask, I'll take the time to answer.
I actually taught an English class about asking questions.

I am Odd, but please call me hack.
I'm originally from Syracuse, New York.
But, I've lived in Taiwan for the past 15 years.
My wife Kosette and I have 2 kids, an 8 year old girl and a 4 year old boy.

I have been a graphic designer and artist for over 25 years.
That's what I went to school for.
Teaching has also been my thing for the past 13 years,
8 years of kindergarten and 5 years of high school and jr. high.

I have always liked games but never really knew about the hobby.
We enjoyed party games with the family at the holidays.
I also loved card games like, euchre, spades, pitch and poker.
A little over 3 years ago I was introduced to Catan and Carcasonne.
These games spawned an interest to learn more.
I had about 8 games in my collection at the time.
Now I have over 500.

My wife and I contacted Yoyo from Swan Publishing for a meeting.
We wanted to sell some games in our cafe.
After a few hours I had a couple jobs lined up doing art for games.
I also knew I now had a way to get games made.
That was the start of it all.

I registered for BGG in January 2014,
I spent a few months checking it out before I joined.
At the time it seemed very foreign and complicated.
Now it feels like home.

It was the game design contest section that grabbed my interest.
I stumbled on to the 24 hour design contest.
You need to design a finished print and play game in 24 hours.
I entered it and was hooked, I committed myself to doing it every month.
No matter what.
This month I will enter my 34th straight contest.

Because I'm a teacher I also found myself running contests as well.
The 18 card microgame contest is running now.
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1648402/18-card-microgam...
It's the 6th contest I've hosted.

I also started my own publishing company called Hacko Games.
https://www.facebook.com/Hackogames/
I will try to focus on small games for now.

Kickstarter has been amazing.
I have done 6 projects so far and have plenty more lined up.
Check out Gamer Deck.
It's a series of decks to assist game designers.

Thanks
hack

Great stuff, Hack!

You seem to stick to designer lighter games, which has clearly worked for you so far. Any plans to make slightly heavier games?

Thanks Tim,

I love how crazy Taiwan is, I still see stuff that blows my mind almost everyday. Driving my motorcycle all year is awesome. I miss my family in Syracuse and the food. I go back in the summer and I have an amazing time.

Thanks Gil,

I would love to work on some heavier games. I am working on a few with co designers. I know how much time a heavy game takes and I would rather use that time to make many smaller games. Some day you will see some heavy games. My goal is to do something extremely unique. I'm also working on a line of games that can be played in the classroom with large groups, it's a tough challenge.

Re: Geek of the Week #577 - Odd Hackwelder
Geek of the week "I'm a liar" contest!

Since I design games and run contests this is only appropriate.
I will post a poll everyday like the poll in the header.
There will be 8 polls, my first published game is called 8 the liar.
So, it's just meant to be.

If you get all the polls correct I will give you a free microgame.
If you get 7 correct I will give you 10 gg.
If you get 6 correct I will give you 5 gg.

Once results are posted, you must message me if you win.
It will be too hard to check all the results.

Good Luck!

I had a lot of fun thinking about the first poll.
I am a crazy dude who has done crazy things, you will see.

Thanks Jacab,

I like the classics from the Star Wars but everyone likes those.
I would pick something sleek and modern like the bubble ship from Oblivion.
As far as personal spacecrafts go.
Or the Hermes from Martian because it looks like a spinner toy.
I liked a few ships from the 5th element and Chronicles of Riddick too.

Congrats Hack! I am so happy to see you given this award!

As for your question:

Your designs mostly seem focused in the card game format. And looking at your collection, it looks like you enjoy them as well. Is there any particular "reason" you do mostly card games? Small size? Easier to crunch the math mechanics?

Once again, May you have a awesome week!

Thanks Chad,

They are cheap and easy to make.
Also can ship in an envelope which makes it cheap with less worries and paperwork.
I will do some bigger games in the future for sure, but I would rather another company handle it. The small games I can handle, for now! My game collection is also bought from a graphic designer's perspective. I look at my shelf to get ideas for packaging.

Also I am an extremely prolific guy, it's in my nature. It's alot easier to make 50 small games, then 50 big ones. Plus I have a lot to learn and I'm very excited to do that.

Thanks Paul, I love contests.
It's really about giving yourself deadlines.
I am excited about the 18 card contest going on now.
Can't wait to see what comes from it.
