A unit with 2 armor is attacked by a unit with 1 ATK. Does the armor prevent the 1 damage and then both the 2 points of armor fade?

Only 1 point of armor will be consumed. Think of armor as temporary hit points.

Purple beads. Covering up the Squad Leader shield symbol, or just placed immediately next to the creature (as opposed to the red D6 on the creature indicating damage, or the red beads on the card indicating -1/-1 runes, or the green beads on the card indicating +1/+1 runes).

Placing the counter not on the card itself helps us remember to clean them up at end of turn.

While damage persists in this game, most people still play to kill things outright, because that's what they are accustomed to doing. More importantly, why would you attack if you can't bypass Armor this turn?

There's no point puncturing the armour if you're not going to deal a sizeable amount of damage beyond the armour, indeed. However, turns in Codex can go long, my regular play partner and I can sometimes be fairly slow, and we occasionally even backtrack. It can be useful to have a visual reminder when a turn goes something like:

Sparring Partner attacks your Squad Leader, puncturing its armour and dealing 1 real damage.
Pay 2 to untap Sparring Partner.
Tap Sparring Partner to put a +1/+1 rune on this unblockable guy.
Attack your Tower with the unblockable guy.
Play Jaina and Ember Sparks to deal 1 to your Scavenger Skeleton and 2 to your Ironbark Treant, puncturing both its armour.
Bloodburn gets 1 more rune.
Tap Bloodburn to... hmm... did we already puncture the Squad Leader's armour?
