18 Years Old or 18-Years-Old? When to Hyphenate Years Old

Quote:
The basic rule is,

- Use hyphens for ages expressed as adjectives before a noun or as substitutes for a noun.
- Do not use hyphens when you are simply stating the age of something.

The 15-year-old boy won the race.
The boy who won the race is 15 years old.

The hyphens have nothing to do with discussing ages. It's the fact you're combining the words that form an adjective describing the upcoming noun.

Do I get to be the Hitler or Goebbels of the Grammar Nazis now?

Commas are fun, too:

Can we eat out, Grandma?

NOT OK:

OK:

I helped my uncle, Jack, off a donkey.

NOT OK:

I helped my uncle Jack off a donkey.

Commas are critical! Be careful out there, people!

People need to be careful how they use: commas; hyphens; ellipses.
