From the living rules, it seems there is a co-op mode. But how well does it work? Would this game be getting just for co-op play?

For me - yes. It works great as coop. It works awesome as competetive. And it work really good as solitaire (since you are playing 2 colors it is like coop).

actually harder as a coop as the game takes over the roles of the parasites..

Yes, still hard even if players are not competing. My daughter and I have the goal of just creating a complex organism, ideally land, but we'll settle for marine. So we tried co-op, but still haven't met our goal...

So this game is not mainly a co-op?

Just some alternative rules to have a co-op mode? Or what?

I've not acquired the game yet or read a rules book, so I don't know.
But I thought it was supposed to be, and I was really looking forward to a Sierra Madre, specifically co-operative game.

Please don't tell me co-op is just some side version of the game.

The main page says "cooperative play"

I wouldn't say it's a "side version." I would say there's two ways to play it. Competitive and cooperative. One puts the parasites in control of the players and the goal is to have the most VPs at the end of the game. The other puts the parasites in the control of the game rules and the goal is to have macroorganisms by the end of the game. That's it. There's no other differences.
