I spent every evening of a long, cold winter on the couch with my laptop and graphics program. Three months of work yielded the 132 illustrations needed for an illustrated version Cat's Cradle for Amazon's Kindle World.

Turns out the pay for such a herculean feat is not wonderful: the entire job netted me a whopping $25 gift certificate. I used the gift certificate to purchase Pylos, a wonderful, quick little gem of an abstract strategy.

Three months of work for a game? Oh, if that were the entire cost, I'd have been happy. No, fast forward 6 months:

In the summer, we keep a few favorite games on the table on the screened porch. Turns out the porch is not rodent-proof. I looked for the 30 balls that make up Pylos but could find only 19. The mice had chewed through the bag and carried the rest off thinking they were acorns.

I ordered a bag full of 7/8" wooden spheres. I spent an evening in the workshop carefully painting 17 of them red (15 plus 2 extras), and 17 I simply oiled. The red and natural spheres look even more pretty than the rather fetching originals. Whew!

And in second place: I did a week of illustrating and made 35 graphics just to get my hands on [d0x3d!]

I'm the hardest working man in game business!

Interesting story. Which makes me ask, don't you know what your salary will be before you commit to the task? Seems like they got those 100+ illustrations (almost) for free!

In my opinion, the things we do purely for the love of it are the best paid of all.

I totally agree.

Artists deserve to make a living though.

I totally agree - I'm aware my comment glosses over reality somewhat!

Wow. I bought my copy of Pylos at Goodwill for $1.99.

Pete (probably earned that while daydreaming at his desk)

Recently 'garnered' a copy of OLD AH "Acquire" complete, and even with 2 extra "weird" tiles for $.25-cents-USD. cool
