Hi Folks! Let me start this post with a quick introduction. My name is James D, and I'm an aimless post graduate from the south west part of Wales in the United Kingdom. A fan of more traditional board games and newer party games, but with a soft spot for Talisman in particular.

This game project has been in production since March 2015 - however I haven't felt confident enough to show what I have in till now - with the game in a more advanced point of production and polish, having been tweaked through testing with small groups but on the precipice of wider game testing and promotion.

The genesis of the game came from my first experience of a Dungeons and Dragons campaign. While I fell in love with role playing a character and creating a collaborative story, I felt that the amount of set up needed before hand and complexity of the mechanics hampered my experience. On the flip side, a more simple dungeon game was quick to start and easy to learn, however didn't give me room to express myself. From there, I had a few small ideas that eventually became one idea - a game with the expansive gameplay of a D&D - but could be fit in a jacket pocket, and only need a six sided dice and a counter to start playing. After some tweaking and fixing, DD became that game.

DD is a game of exploration, encounters, treasures, dice duelling and grand finales in 96 cards. The game follows a three act structure of exposition, exploration and escape, and can be played solo, in small groups and in large, all without a game master. The game is also built with re-playability in mind, as well as remixing.

All players start the game by choosing an avatar to represent themselves in game, a perk to give them a unique ability, a destination to flavour the setting and a motivation to give them a goal to work towards. Creative players can and should nix or add any element to the game and still have it work, including unique avatars, complementary abilities, setting ideas and story telling elements to tailor their game. Players can also choose to nix destinations and perks to make the game more streamlined.

In the second act, players move around the dungeon by drawing cards from a room deck, investigating them by turning the room cards over and pulling a corresponding card from either the encounter or treasure deck. Every encounter card has a description of the encounter and the outcome of the encounter - a unique gimmick to that encounter that relate to a face of a six sided dice or whatever players will have to hand.

In order to boil the experience of a campaign down to its essence, all goals, fights and treasures are given a unique point value, and as players collect cards their tally increases. The aim of DD is to have the most points to hand at the end of the game.

Once players have made their goal or placed all room cards, a Climax is played. These add unique wrinkles and outcomes to the end of the game, and naturally move players towards escaping from the Dungeon.

Fitting with the streamlined and offbeat nature of the game, the art style has eschewed a more traditionally fantasy look and instead gone for something more simplified, cutesy and somewhat symbolic looking. Every encounter and treasure strives for a strong silhouette and big personality, and where possible fit in with it's gimmick, in a limited colour palette and miniature look. Cards are written with brevity and a little levity to fit within the theme of the game also. Where possible, symbols are used to convey ideas in order to build a basic ludic language with the player that helps with streamlining the game, inspired by Monopoly and Subway maps.

I'm hoping that DD could not only be a light game that can be enjoyed by people who like low commitment party games or a break game between campaigns, but even be a gateway title into more complex tabletop and role-playing games. I'm also hoping through expansions and remixing with other titles, DD could develop into a platform for more free form adventuring and storytelling. I'm also looking at ways DD could be themed with different encounter and treasure types – meaning a player could swap a fantasy setting for a sci-fi, noir or a horror theme without needing to update their room cards, or even mix them together.

I'm really keen to hear feedback – I'm worried that on first impressions it might be quite similar to other titles, though I hope there's elements to it that are unique enough that it has become its own game. I'm also hoping to use this thread to update the game, and hopefully learn from the community to make the title better. I'm hoping to take this game to Kickstarter in the future, and any advice regarding that would be invaluable.

In the meantime, The game is (nearly!) ready to print and play, as well as (almost!) available to play on Tabletop Simulator. I'll update the thread when this is so - and 9'd be interested in knowing peoples experiences with the title, and am open to hear feedback on fixing the game up!

This looks great! The rules say 2 or more players but your thread subject says solo is an option...which is it? (Really hope it's solo)

Hey! Super sorry for the late reply.

The rules are somewhat generically aimed at party play for the time being (at least in till this project becomes a bit more concrete)

But the basic thought is that - as the game is generated from drawing cards from the deck, and the goals are point driven, there's nothing stopping solo players going for high score runs. I don't think at the moment that there's anything that requires people to have more than one player present (there are mechanics that revolve around party play but they can be ignored and the game is still very playable).

Thanks for the interest! I've updated the top of the page with some updated PDFs, and tabletop simulator has also been updated!

My website has also been updated with DD related stuff! More news hopefully soon.

Was also wondering if I could leverage the knowledge and experience of this forum...

I was looking at potentially showing this off at some conventions this coming 2017. I was wondering what state you have to get a game up to in order to be show ready, and what are some of the better boardgame conventions in the UK for designers/hobbiests?

ALSO! I've been using a very friendly printer near me for most of my prototyping (don't come to more than about £5 for nearly 100 cards which I think is pretty excellent) - but was wondering if anyone knew any good international card printers, only as I'm considering sending some prototype copies to infulencers and some early adopters.
