I've just completed turn 6, so here's the latest update a few days ahead of schedule.

Normal, Poor, 1 hex visibility
Allied Air Points: 0
The 101st Airborne is sent to Bastogne, and the 82nd Airborne to Werbomont.
German replacements are 2AV and 8 non-AV.
Allied replacements are 4AV and 12 non-AV.

The German wins the first player roll, and chooses to activate first.

116th Panzer Division
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Pass
The SturmTiger company attached as a reinforcement to the Division never arrives, as they all break down before they can join the formation. The Division presses forward toward Vielsalm from the South, but even with the aid of a Greif team the bridge at Salmchateau is blown, so the road to Parker’s Crossroads is taken instead. KG Stephan engages TF Harper of CCR/9. Despite the superiority of the German armour both sides lose 2 steps. Parker’s Crossroads are taken by the lead units. Fatigue remains at 1 and there is a 2nd activation.

KG Stephen again trades losses, killing TF Harper and overrunning the CCR/9 HQ before speeding to catch the main body of the Division. La Roche en Ardenne is captured by speedy truck-mounted infantry, but again a Greif team fails to prevent destruction of the bridge, and the units have to turn north towards Hotton. This time the a Greif Team aids the capture of the bridge intact. Unfortunately Hotton itself is held by engineers and there is no OBJ marker to allow an attack this day. The Division has outrun the most optimistic hopes of its staff planners! Fatigue remains at 1.



The Allies ponder what they can do about the breakthrough. There are no units that can get in front of 116th Panzer this turn, and no reinforcements next turn that can do so (I should have deployed the 82nd more to the SW of Werbomont). The best thing might be to try and cut their supply lines, so the 82nd is ordered to Vielsalm. This should both cut supply to the 118th and block the further advance of Peiper and 1st SS. At least that’s the hope.

82nd Airborne Division
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Pass
The main problem is the slow movement of the Divison HQ (leg 2!). This makes it really hard to shift the Division after it has arrived in theatre. Battalions are detached to hold Stavelot and Trois Pont, while lead elements marching south, ending 2km from Vielsalm on both sides of the Salm river. Failure to get a 2nd activation would be a blow, but the roll is a 4, +1 for Fresh, and the Division marches on.

Units reach and deploy to hold Vielsalm and the trail through the Bois de Reuland. The 116th’s MSR is cut for now, but there are opportunities to the south to reopen it.



2nd Panzer Division

Activation: Partial
With only a partial, the division will not be able to both take Houffalize and deal with the units of the 110/28 that hamper the advance. There is only a 50% chance of a 2nd activation. The MSR demands that the advance is halted until supply lines are secure. The OBJ goes on Clervaux, and TF von Bohm puts a recon OBJ on the battalion holding Donnage before moving to Noville. The panzers drop support and kill 4 steps of the battalion holding Donnage (to 1). The final attack by KG Gutman rolls a 2, and it is thrown back with a 2 step loss. The 2nd battalion of the 110/28 holds grimly on, as do the defenders of Clervaux, also down to their last step. Fatigue increases to 1 and a 2nd activation is rolled.

KG von Bohm has to return to place another OBJ on Donnange. This time an attack by fire kills the last step. Similarly the barrage accompanying the attack on Clervaux kills the last step of the engineer defenders and the 110/28 HQ is forced to retreat west. Mechanised units push west as far as Noville, the third time this village has been occupied by German advance units. Fatigue increase to 2.



1st Infantry Division

Activation: Partial
The 26th Regiment’s battalions fan out to protect the roads giving access to Malmedy, while other units are sent to cover Camp D’Elsenborn. Reinforcements bring the Division to full strength. A barrage kills a step of the lead KG X of 150 Panzer Brigade, but Fatigue increases to 3 as a result. There is no 2nd activation.



5th Fallshirmjager Division

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: +1
Activation: Pass
The formation continues to lead the push west. Martelange is captured with the bridge intact, but Ettelbruck has to be abandoned to allow KG Bernk to catch up with the Division. There is no 2nd activation.



7th Armored Division

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -5
Activation: Partial
Despite the breakdown of the supply line, the formation is able to activate. The Division abandons St Vith in order to move south and threaten the flank of the penetration by 2nd Panzer and Lehr. The move also enables the supply line to be re-established via Werbomont. A 2nd activation is gained.

The Division deploys and cautiously probes south along roads choked with scattered supply units, linking up with CCR/9 at Weiswampach.



Lehr Panzer Division

Activation: Partial
Lehr is ordered to seize Houffalize and open the supply line to 116 Panzer. With only a partial activation the division is caught half way through a passage of 2nd Panzer, and fails to gain a 2nd activation.



106th Infantry Division
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Fail
The 422nd Regiment continues its retreat from the Schnee Eifel, sloughing off steps as it goes. Unprepared units deploy in defence of St Vith. There is no 2nd activation.



KG Peiper

Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: +1
Activation: Pass
Peiper presses west through the Bois de Reuland, driving back the forward pickets of the 82nd Airborne onto Trois Ponts. Fresh status is lost, but a 2nd activation is gained.

KG Spitze overruns the 82nd HQ and moves to just west of Trois Ponts. The Tigers move between Trois Ponts and the forward US defenders and capture the southern bridge intact. Their attacks by fire eliminate 2/508. The US engineers are forced to retreat westward, and mechanised units move to pound the garrison of Trois Ponts, with limited success. Peiper really needs more artillery to help him out. Fatigue increases to 1.



99th Infantry Division

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -3
Set Prep Def
Activation: Partial
The battalions pull back to defend Elsenborn Ridge, and a barrage takes out 2 steps of 12th SS’ 2/25 battalion. Fatigue remains at zero and there is no 2nd activation.



1st SS Panzer Division
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: +1
Activation: Pass
The formation drives on Malmedy, brushing aside the 1/26 battalion of 1st ID. Traffic problems prevent the truck-mounted infantry getting beyond Baugnez Crossroads, but the Recon Battalion reaches the outskirts of the city and calls in artillery that kills a step from each defending unit. Fresh status is retained, and a 2nd activation is rolled.

The JagdPanzers drop support on Malmedy, but attacks by fire from them and from KG Knittel do no damage. Knittel leads the Pioneers in an attack into the city, which disperses the engineers and drives out the Norwegians. Malmedy is taken. SS infantry fan out to probe Stavelot and Francorchamps. Fresh status is retained.



CCR/9th Armored
Fatigue: 2
SNAFU mods: -4
Activation: Pass
Only Task Force Rose remains of the formation, but it is able to retake Burg Reuland and the important road crossing of the Our. There is no 2nd activation.



12th Volksgrenadier Division
I seem to have inadvertently moved a battalion of the division forward with the 150 Pz Brigade. I’ll move it back next to their HQ.

Activation: Fail
I was hoping the division could take over the front line against the 2nd and 99th ID and free up 12SS, but it is not to be. I take a flip and lower fatigue to 1.

109th/28 Regiment

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Partial
The Regiment extracts the trapped 3rd Battalion from Bettandorf and thickens up the defence of Diekirch. A barrage fails to effect the I/915. Fatigue remains at 0 and there is no 2nd activation.



18th Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: +2
Activation: Pass
Two battalions are sent to outflank St Vith to the north. The 3/422 are forced to surrender, and KG Renn drives back the mechanised infantry of CCB/9. The Division remains Fresh and a 2nd activation is rolled.

I/294 marches down the road to St Vith and in a hasty attack rolls just high enough to disperse the defending unit and force the 106th HQ to flee. The city is taken. KG Renn loses a step in driving back CCB/9’s 14th Tank battalion. The 1/423 is surrounded and almost destroyed, but the last step retreats to a position where it causes 2 losses to the 18thVG due to isolation. Fresh status is lost.



CCB/9th Armored

Fatigue: 2

Activation: Fail
The formation accepts the fail so that the trapped HQ can escape back and re-establish the MSR. A 2nd activation is gained.

The tanks drop support of the Germans in St Vith, and a lucky roll by the 27th armoured infantry drives out the defenders and retakes the city. Fatigue increases to 3.



560th Volksgrenadier Division

Activation: Pass
The Pioneers circle to take Ouren from the West. The unprotected 112/28 HQ is forced to flee, and its 3rd battalion is destroyed on the east side of the river. Fatigue remains at zero and a 2nd activation is gained.

10th Armored Division

Activation: Pass
10th Armored retakes the abandoned Ettelbruck and drives north up the Skyline Drive. A second activation is gained.

The attack north continues as far as Hoscheid, where TFs Standish and Chamberlain pour fire into the trailing unit of 26VG, killing 4 steps (to 2). Fatigue remains at 1.



3rd Fallshirmjager Division

Activation: Partial
The formation has been left behind by the pace of the main advance, and is ordered to march at utmost speed to engage the US northern shoulder. The response is sluggish, and there is no 2nd activation.



9th Infantry Division

Activation: Partial
An attack drives the unprepared II/751 back over the hills to Hofen, and battalions march to defend the pass. Fatigue increases to 2 and there is no 2nd activation.



150th Panzer Brigade

Activation: Pass
The Brigade surrounds Waimes, dropping support of the garrison and reducing it to a single step. Fresh status is lost and there is no 2nd activation.



CCB/10th Armored
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Partial
The formation is ordered to keep the supply line to Bastogne open. An attack on Martelange is rejected in favour of protecting the Sibret-Neufchateau road from the 5FJ. The vehicles press cautiously north as far as Fauvillers and get a 2nd activation.

Activation: Partial
The junctions at Fauvillers and Nives are defended against a possible German advance.



276th Volksgrenadier Division

Activation: Partial
The Division encircles a battalion of CCA/9, killing a step with a barrage, and pushing south to interdict the MSR of 4th ID. Fatigue remains at 1 and there is no 2nd activation.

Activation: Pass
60th Battalion tries to break out of its encirclement, but just loses a step. The tanks and recon unit succeed in pushing back the Pioneers trying to cut the supply road for 4ID. Fatigue remains at zero and there is no 2nd activation. The 60th loses another step due to isolation.



62nd Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: +2
Activation: Pass
Battalions push forward over the Our, herding the infantry of the 106th on their never-ending retreat. Fatigue increases to 1 and there is no 2nd activation.



112th/28 Regiment

Activation: Fail
The 1st Battalion falls back from Ouren and the Train relocates. [A mistake here - with a Fail you can only flip a Train, not move it] A 2nd activation is gained

The Regiment does its best to regroup at Troisvierges, but the battalions are stumbling only slowly westward.



212th Volksgrenadier Division

The Division goes over to the defensive. A barrage kills 1 step of TF Luckett. Fatigue increases to 2 and there is no 2nd activation.



2nd Infantry Division

The Division takes a flip and lowers fatigue to zero.

Fuhrer Begleit Brigade

Activation: Pass
The Brigade is tasked to cross the Our by the Dasburg bridge and use the Clervaux road to join the advanced units. The Brigade reaches Arzfeld, but does not gain a 2nd activation.



101st Airborne Division

Activation: Partial
General McAuliffe is tempted to shift his position east and engage the advancing Germans with artillery, but calmer heads prevail and a defensive perimeter is set up to shield Bastogne. No roll is made for a 2nd activation.



326th Volksgrenadier Division

Set Prep Def
Activation: Partial
Stand-off 88s and a barrage destroy the recon TF of 2nd ID before it can slip away. The Division sets up defensive lines against 9th ID. Fatigue increases to 3 and there is no 2nd activation.



30th Infantry Division

SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Partial
The 30th marches towards Spa, but is unable to reach the city before running out of activations.



12th SS Panzer Division
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Fail
The unit hopes for a 2nd activation but rolls a 1. It seems that the SS expected to be relived by 12VG, and confused orders resulted in them failing to advance. This has put a crimp in the German plans to support 1st SS.

110th/28 Regiment
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -3
Activation: Partial
The only surviving company retreats over the Clerf. A second activation is gained.

Fatigue: 0

Activation: Partial
The retreat continues, and the company is now back in friendly lines.



277th Volksgrenadier Division

Activation: Pass
The Division passes through 12SS to engage the 2nd and 99th Infantry. Barrages are ineffective. Fatigue remains at zero and a 2nd activation is gained.

II/423 is sent to the graveyard after a day of heavy bombardment. This is the first (re-buildable) German unit lost to enemy action. Fatigue remains at zero.

Activation: Partial
The Division would like to keep pushing on Bastogne, but the threat of 10th Armored to its rear can’t be ignored. There are no other formations close enough to block the US armour, so the infantry will have to engage them until reinforcements arrive. TF Kunkel drives back the US armour with losses in a couple of sharp engagements. Fatigue increase to 3 and a 2nd activation is rolled.

352nd Volksgrenadier Division

The Division speeds along the roads to Manderfeld and takes Rollbahn ‘E’ toward Ambleve. There is no 2nd activation.




9th SS Panzer Division

Activation: Pass
9th SS takes the Hofen road. KG Recke and the Panzers soften up the battalion of the 9th Infantry holding the Hofen pass, and then an artillery-supported attack by I/19 finishes them off and seizes the road on the western side. Other trucked SS infantry pour through the gap and capture Kalterherberg. The intent of the attack is to surround and eliminate the 99th and 2nd Infantry Divisions. Fresh status is lost and a 2nd activation is rolled.

The SS push on, dropping support on opposing units and trying to drive them back to open up a route to Elsenborn. The US units blocking their path manage to hold out. Fatigue increases to 1.
