The last Bots take on the Bots thread was pretty helpful for a lot of people (and I am a dufuss for removing the images from my gallery, not thinking that it would delete them form my post).

I am doing a second one here. This, again, will be one post for each turn. I will also make a comment thread for people to discuss, or tell me that I screwed something up. The convention that I will be using for random die rolls will be (gold, red, blue)

A big Thank you to Russ Williams(russ) for helping me to debug some serious weirdness that BGG has for posting

So, without further ado, here is Turn 1.

Card 1 (Gulf of Tonkin, Monsoon) US (Event)

US takes the event, Conducting Airstrikes and moving 6 US pieces from Out of Play to Cities.

Airstrikes: Since there are no exposed targets (being the first card of the game) , the airstrike will just reduce the trail by 1 to zero.
The US will place 6 pieces (2 bases and 4 troops).

Bases are placed first. Random roll of (1,6,3) shows Qui Nhon. Since the US will only place 1 base per space, a second roll is made to determine where the second base will go. (3,6,5) gives of Hue. Since as much of the event is to be carried out in each target space, the 4 troops are also placed there.

Card 1 (Gulf of Tonkin) NVA (Rally+Infiltrate)

NVA is up next
Going down their flowchart, there is no attack target and no terror (I have never seen the terror opportunity in all the games I have ever played). So, they do what the NVA does best, rally.

3 spaces are chosen, reducing NVA resources to 7. The first two conditions are not met, so the guerillas will be placed at random bases (1,4,4), (4,4,3), (1,6,4) choosing The Parrots Beak, Southern Laos and Central Laos respectively. The trail is at 0, so only one guerilla is placed at each.

Since the trail is <2 and NVA has 3+ resources, NVA improves the trail (resources 7 =>5)

Rally shows special activity to be Infiltrate. The requirement that 4+ troops will be placed is met, so we proceed with this activity.

Infiltrate first priority is most guerillas. We have 3 spaces tied for this, so two will get the activity. (4,2,5), (1,6,2) gives us The Parrots Beak and Southern Laos. Each gets 2 troops and exchanges two guerillas each for 2 additional troops at each.

Card 2: Coup (Young Turks)

Victory: Way too early to be thinking of that

Resources:
No sabotage or COIN control Laos/ Cmbodia.
ARVN: Aid 15+Econ 15+30 remaining resources => 60 total
VC: 7 bases+5 remaining resources => 12 total
NVA: 2 for trail+4 bases+5 remaining resources => 11 total

I screwed this one up, counting 4 NVA bases when there were only three. I wanted to correct this, but its effects are felt too far downstream for me to edit now

No US casualties: Aid remains at 15

Support:
US Pacify:

1) Greatest shift is Saigon from Passive Support to Active Support for 6 points (ARVN resources 60 =>57)
2) Next greatest is a shift of 4 at Hue going from Neutral to Active Support (57 =>51)
3) Kontum and Da Nang both can shift for 2 going from Neutral to Active support (51 =>39)

VC Agitate:
1) Greatest shift ties for Quang Tri and Binh Dinh at 4 each Neutral to Active Opposition (VC resources 12 => 8)
2) Next Pleiku can shift from Neutral to Active Opposition for 2 points (8 =>6)
3) 3) There are no additional eligible spaces for agitation

Redeploy:
No COIN units in Laos/ Cambodia

ARVN Redeploy:
ARVN will use Troops before Police to change most control
There are equal number of Troops (2) in a number of spaces, so (5,5,3) shows Hue. 1 troop is moved from Hue to Pleiku to add COIN control. There are no additional Cities/ bases that are not in COIN control.
There are no provinces that started in COIN control that do not have police

All cities have at least 3 Cubes

No additional troops need to be relocated.

NVA Redeploy: There are no NVA troops on the board.

Commitment:
US has 52 Available+Support, so they will not change policy (JFK)

US will send 2 bases and 6 troops to bring available to 15.

There are only 2 spaces that have COIN control and US pieces in them, so the bases will be placed in Kontum and Da Nang.
US troops are added as evenly as possible to US occupied spaces in COIN control (highest population breaks ties). 2 to Qui Nhon (2 total), 1 to Pleiku (2 total). One is added to Saigon to bring up to 3. There are two troops left and three eligible spaces, so (4,3,3) and (2,3,3) place them in Qui Nhon and Da Nang, respectively.

Reset: No change in trail; cleanup markers; adjust eligibility.

Card 3 (Brinks Hotel) VC (Rally+Subvert)
The VC do not have any guerillas in cities, so they cannot execute the event.

Going down the flowchart, they do not have any underground guerillas that can terror at support. They do have 12+ available guerillas, so they will Rally.

Per instructions, they will choose up to six spaces

1) Bases at 4+VC guerillas: No spaces have 4+ VC
2) Two spaces that contain ARVN cubes but no VC: Only Quang Nam qualifies, as the rest of the spaces that have ARVN and no VC are at support. One VC guerilla is placed in Quang Nam (resources 8 =>7)
3) Bases with <4 underground guerillas: There are 7 eligible, so we will roll to see which 5 get guerillas. (2,3,5) puts 2 guerillas in Quang Duc, (2,1,6) puts 3 into Binh Dinh, (6,5,6) puts 3 into Quang Tin, (4,4,4) puts 2 into Binh Tuy, (5,6,1) puts 2 into Pleiku. (resources 7 => 2)

Subvert:
VC have no underground guerillas at Active Support, nor on LOCs and they have >0 resources, so they will not tax. Next priority is Subvert. They have exactly 2 eligible spaces, each with only one ARVN cube, and only 1 guerilla available. Since the priority is to first remove COIN control, Quang Nam is the first target (1 police replaced with 1 VC guerilla). The troop is removed at Pleiku. (2 ARVN cubes removed: Patronage 15=>14)

Card 3 (Brinks Hotel) US (Event)
The US has a halo on their symbol, so we need to check the special instructions for this card. Since ARVN is a bot, the US will choose the option that does not involve lowering Patronage.

ARVN gets 10 Aid (15 => 25) and Young Turks is flipped.

Card 4 (Green Berets) ARVN (Event)

This is another haloed event. Special instructions state that the pieces placed are to gain most COIN control and must gain a minimum of 2 population. Kien Phong, Kien Giang and Quang Tri are all candidates (6,5,1) shows Kien Phong; it will receive 2 Rangers (ARVN pieces placed by ARVN events before US) and is set to Active Support.

Card 4 (Green Berets) NVA (Rally + Infiltrate)

Going down the NVA flowchart, they are not in the position to attack nor terrorize. They have greater than 20 troops available and trail is less than 2, so they will rally.

They will activate a maximum of 3 spaces.
First bullet is to place bases where 4+ non-base NVA/VC. There are three such locations, so Central Laos, Southern Laos and the Parrot’s Beak all get bases (NVA resources 11 to 8)

The trail is less than3 and NVA resources are 3+, so it is improved to 2 (NVA resources 8 to 6)

Infiltrate will add 4+ troops, so NVA will go with this option.
No bases can be taken over, so the first space will be where the most NVA guerillas reside (3 troops to North Vietnam).

The second space is at 2 bases (1,6,1) puts 4 troops in Southern Laos.
Finally, 1 guerilla in North Vietnam is replaced by a troop.

Card 5 (Sihanouk) US (Sweep+Airlift)

Another card with a halo, this time it instructs to only take the event if Nixon policy is in effect, so the US will Sweep. Since it is JFK policy, airlift will be the preferred special activity (no assault opportunities and Quang Tri satisfies sweep requirements of all underground would be activated at a base).

Da Nang, Hue, Qui Nhon and Saigon all are candidates for Sweep from (leaving 3 cubes and COIN control behind).

There are multiple 2 population spaces where control could be added and all guerillas flipped. (2,6,3) yields Quang Tri and (4,6,4) gives Quang Tin.

3 Troops Sweep into Quang Tin from Qui Nhon along with 1 from Da Nang.
2 Troops Sweep into Quang Tri from Hue adding COIN control.

Now we need to airlift to finish off Quang Tin requirements. Saigon has the most troops above control requirements, so they send all three to add control to Quang Tin.

Both Binh Dinh and Pleiku are sweeping and can use some help, and there is still one airlift site left, so (6,2,2) shows Hue to be the embarkation site (2 Troops), and (1,3,4) makes Bihn Dinh the LZ.
All sites with US troops activate the appropriate number of guerillas.

Card 5 (Sihanouk) VC (Terror + Tax)

Since the VC have no available guerillas, the event is ineffective. Therefore, the VC will use the flowchart.

There is an underground VC at support, so Terror will be the operation.

Kien Phong and Quang Nam are both eligible terror locations, and each shift one space towards Active Opposition. (VC resources 2=>0). There are no other eligible spaces or VC would continue to terror after taxing.

Tax: There are 3 non-COIN controlled Active opposition spaces with 2 population and underground guerillas, Tay Ninh, Binh Dinh and Kien Giang. These along with (3,2,4) Plieku shift one space towards Active Support. (VC resources 0 =>14)

Note, because of this game, I now know how to spell Sihanouk and Sihanoukville. I am not sure where this will help me in life, but, hopefully, this bit of knowledge hasn't overwritten something important in my brain.

Card 6 (LRRP) ARVN (Event)

I am using the revised LRRP card

(4,4,2) Places 3 Irregulars at the Parrots Beak.

Airstrikes follow US priorities.
There is no NVA population to remove nor any guerillas on LOCs. There are two targets at Active Opposition where bases could be removed.

(2,6,4) Targets Quang Tri, removing a base and 2 guerilla. The remaining 3 pieces come from Qunag Tin as it is the Active opposition space where the most pieces would be removed. Lastly, Trail 2 to 1.

Card 6 (LRRP) NVA (Rally+Infiltrate):

In the Parrots Beak, the NVA could revove 2 Irregulars. However, they are already at NVA control, cannot remove 4 pieces, nor the last COIN piece, so they will not attack.

No terror opportunities exist, and they meet Rally conditions, so they will Rally.

North Vietnam has 4+ non base NVA/VC, so it will get a base.(NVA resources 6=>5)

There is no COIN control in Laos/Cambodia

Southern Laos and the Parrots Beak both have bases without NVA guerillas, so they will each receive 3 guerillas (NVA resources 5 =>3)

The Trail is less than 3 and the NVA has 3+ resources, so Trail 1=>2 (Resources 3=>1)

4+ Troops can be placed, so the NVA will Infiltrate.

The Parrots Beak and Southern Laos are tied at 3 guerillas each, so they will both bet the Infiltrate locations, each receiving 4 troops, and exchanging 1 guerilla each for an additional troop.

Card 7 (Burning Bonze) VC (Event)

Saigon is shifted to passive Support and ARVN Aid 25=>13

Card 7 (Burning Bonze) USA (Assault+ Airlift)

A base can be removed at Quang Tin, so the US will Assault. Airlift will be used to aid with the Assault priorities.

Quang Tri and Quang Tin both have 3 US troops beyong what is needed for COIN control or operation, so these will be the embarkation points for troops.

One additional troop in Pleiku will remove a base, so it will receive one troop. Sending the other 5 troops to Binh Dinh will result in the most enemies being removed, so it is the other LZ. An Irregular remains in Quang Tri to keep COIN control.

Assaults are carried out in Pleiku and Quang Tin (removing all enemies), along with Binh Dinh (removing 4 VC guerillas)

Card 8 (Uncle Ho) NVA (Event)

Ho No, it is time for a big one. NVA will take the event.

First the VC will perform 3 consecutive limited actions.
There are no terror locations, and VC have 12+ guerillas available; so they will Rally. The first space would be to add a base at 4+ VC guerillas. (1,1,2) is Quang Duc. Two guerillas are replaced by a base.

The second limited action would also be a rally since there are still 12+ available guerillas. Binh Tuy is the only available space, so a base will be placed there.

The number of Available Guerillas is now at 19, so another rally will take place. There are no base opportunities, so a guerilla would be placed at ARVN cubes, but none are outside of support spaces.

Next Priority is a base with less than 4 Underground. There are three possible targets (Binh Tuy, Quang Duc and Tay Ninh). (6,6,3) places 3 guerillas at Tay Ninh.

Now the NVA get three limited actions.

Troop attack can now remove the last COIN piece at the Parrots Beak, so this space will be attacked, sending 3 Irregulars to Casulties.

There are no more attack spaces, and no Terror opportunities. There are greater than 10 available NVA guerillas, so they will Rally. No bases can be placed, and there is no Laos/ Cambodia COIN control, so 4 guerillas are sent to North Vietnam, as there are bases there without guerillas.

For the last Operation, there are no attack or terror opportunities. However, there are no longer greater than10 guerillas available, greater than 20 troops available, and the Trail is not less than 2. So NVA will March.

The first priority is to get 4 guerillas, or as close to 4 as possible into an empty Laos/ Cambodia space. 2 guerillas can move from North Vietnam, and since this is a free operation, they can use the Trail for additional moves. (2,4,5) moves these guerillas to Sihanoukville.

Card 8 (Uncle Ho) ARVN (Train+Govern)

The ARVN finally get to do an Operation. They have 21 pieces available, so they qualify for the first one on the list, Train.

All cities/bases are already at COIN control, so cubes will be placed where none of that type are. Kontum, DaNang and Pleiku all are lacking ARVN troops, so they will each get 3 Troops and 3 Police (ARVN resources 39 to 27).

Next comes Govern. Since Hue is at Active Support with more ARVN cubes than US, it will drop to Passive Support and 2 Aid will go to Patronage (Patronage 14 to 16, Aid 13 to 11).

There are no more Active support spaces that qualify (since Da Nang and Kontum trained this turn), so Kien Hoa will be chosen to add 6 Aid (Aid 11 to 17). Since Young Turks was flipped by the Brinks Hotel Event, ARVN get no bonus Patronage from Govern Activities.

There are no spaces that qualify for base placement, so ARVN will Paciify. ARVN will only train in 3 spaces a turn, so Pleiku is the only eligible space. It shifts form Passive Opposition to Passive Support (ARVN resources 27 to 21).

Card 9 (Fact Finding) US (Event)

This is a haloed event for the US, instructing to choose the option that does not reduce Patronage (since ARVN is not a human player). US will send two pieces form out of play to South Vietnam. Since there are only Troops available, they will be sent instead of Bases.(1,6,1) puts them into Ba Xuyen, ARVN Aid increases by 6 to 23.

Card 9 (Fact Finding) VC (Rally)

VC have no eligible terror opportunities and 12+ available guerillas, so they will Rally.

They can place a base in Tay Ninh, and will do so (VC resources 14=>13).
There are still no spaces with ARVN cubes t5hat are not at support.

Next are bases with <4 underground guerillas. Guerillas are placed at Binh Tuy, Quang Duc and Binh Dinh (VC resources 13=>10).

2 Rally spaces remain. Placing a guerilla at Quang Tri removes COIN control (VC resources 10=>9).

Last Rally would be at a space with 1-3 guerillas (1,5,3) places at Quang Nam (resources 9=>8).

VC resources are >0 and no tax possible at Active support or on an LOC.
There are no underground VC with ARVN for Agitate, so there will be no Special Activity for the VC this turn.

Card 10 (Medivac) ARVN (Sweep+Raid)

ARVN is first up, but their event text states to choose Op plus Special Activity instead. ARVN have less than 12 available pieces, there are no VC blocking access to a city via LOCs, and nothing to assault. Thus, they will Sweep.

Before Sweep, they will Raid. The ranges at Kien Phong cannot move without losing COIN control, so one will activate to remove the VC guerilla there. Quang Nam is not in COIN control, and moving into Quang Tri will give COIN control there, so the Ranger activates, moves to Quang Tri and removes the VC guerilla there.

There are no sweeps in place for the ARVN, so they will only perform one Sweep, to gain the most COIN control. Moving 3 Troops from Pleiku, 1 Troop from An Loc and 2 troops from Saigon adds COIN control to Tay Ninh and flips all three guerillas there (ARVN resources 21 =>18)

Card 10 (Medivac) NVA (March+Infiltrate)

The special instructions for this card also state to choose Op +Special Activity.

There are no attack or terror opportunities, and there are not greater than10 guerillas available, greater than20 troops available, and the Trail is not less than2. So NVA will March.

Even though there is a base available, there is no way to get 4 guerillas together, as all of the ones at base locations are on guard duty (leave 2 NVA at base, guerillas first). There are also no available guerillas that are adjacent to LOCs, so we can ignore this bullet point.

Finally we can march 1 group (since there is only 1 NVA resource), to add NVA control to the highest population (COIN control without US base first). There are three possibilities, so (5, 1,2) chooses Kien Phong.
9 Troops move from The Parrots Beak to Kien Phong (NVA resources 1 to 0).

Ambushing will not remove a base, so this will not be the special activity. Infiltrate can add 4+ troops, so it will be performed.

All bases have the same number of guerillas, so they are tied for priority. (4,6,5), (2,3,2) choose Central Laos and the Parrots Beak as Infiltrate sites, placing 4 NVA Troops in each.

Card 11 (Senator Fulbright) VC (Event)

There are no available US bases, so this event just adjusts Aid 23 =>14.

[No pic]

Card 11 (Senator Fulbright) US (Sweep+Airlift)

The US does not fulfil the requirements for assault, and Sweeping in place in Binh Dinh will expose all underground guerillas at a base, so the US will choose Sweep. Only 1-population spaces are able to be swept into. There are not enough US troops to expose all guerillas in Binh Tuy, even with airlift. Thus Quang Duc and Quang Nam will be the targets.

All US Troops from Pleiku and Kontum sweep into Quang Duc. Both Troops from Da Nang and 2 from Bihn Tuy Sweep into Quang Nam, adding COIN control and flipping all underground guerillas. (2,1,3) chose Da Nang as the donor for the extra troop rather than Binh Dinh.

Quang Duc needs 5 more Troops. 3 can be airlifted from Quang Tin, while the 2 additional can come in from Ba Xuyen (Binh Dinh only has 1 Troop beyond COIN control). This will add COIN control to Quang Duc and flip all underground VC (2 US troops required to flip a guerilla in a jungle).

Lastly, Binh Dinh Sweeps in place, flipping all guerillas there.

Card 12 (AAA) NVA (Pass)

AAA is a Capability card, so the NVA will roll to see if they will take it. There is one card in the RVN leader box, so 5 remaining coup cards. The NVA needs to roll under 5 to take the capability. They rolled a 6. Since they have no resources, they will pass (NVA resources 0 =>1)

[no pic]

Card 12 (AAA) ARVN (Sweep+Raid)

The ARVN now make the same roll to see if they will take the AAA capability. They roll a 5, so they will choose OP+Special. They have <12 pieces available, there are no guerillas blocking LOCs and their only assault space will not remove a base on its own, so they choose to Sweep.

Before Sweep, they will Raid if possible. There is only one Underground Ranger. It can add COIN control by moving into Kien Giang and activating, so it will do so.

There are no spaces where the ARVN can Sweep in place to activate guerillas; there are no opportunities to add COIN control to any population, so they will sweep into an enemy base. (3,5,6) moves 3 troops each from Da Nang and Kontum, along with 1 troop drom Qui Nhon into Binh Dinh (ARVN resources 18 to 15).

Card 13 (Ambassador Taylor) US (Event)

This is a haloed US event. The special instructions state to choose the option that does not reduce Patronage (since ARVN is a bot). ARVN Aid 14 to 23, ARVN resources 18 to 27. 2 US Troops from out of play to (4,2,4) Kontum.

Card 13 (Ambassador Taylor) VC (March+Ambush)

There are no Terror opportunities, less than12 VC guerillas available, no way to place 2 bases. There are no underground VC on LOCs, so they will March.

There are 3 Underground VC at Binh Tuy that can move onto LOCs, so they will each move to the three 1-Econ LOCs in range.

There are no more underground VC that can move so now we look at removing the most COIN control. Moving 3 guerillas from Quang Duc and 1 from Tay Ninh, removes COIN control from Saigon (6-population). Next 2 population can be removed from COIN control by moving in 2 guerrillas from Qung Nam to Quang Tri. 2 more COIN control population can be removed by moving 1 VC from Binh Dinh to Quang Tin. Lastly 1 population COIN control can be removed by moving 1 guerilla from Bihn Dinh to Pho Bon. (VC resources 6 to 1).

Since the VC have 1 resource remaining, they will Ambush. VC attack priorities are to remove US troops first, so the VC on Saigon/ Da Lat and on Da Lat/ Cam Ranh will each activate to send 2 US troops in Quang Duc to casualties.

Card 14 (Chu Luc) NVA (Event)

(2,2,2) places all remaining (6) NVA Troops into Quang Tri.

Card 14 (Chu Luc) ARVN (Assault+Transport)

There are only 3 available ARVN pieces, so they will not Train. Saigon/ Ban Me Thout/ An Loc is still guerilla free, so ARVN will not Patrol. Assault in Tay Ninh can remove a base, so ARVN will Assault. Since all Rangers are currently activated and can’t add COIN control by moving, ARVN cannot Raid. So they will Transport first.

There are 7 ARNV Troops beyond COIN control in Binh Dinh, so this will be the transport origin.

ARVN 1st Priority is to remove Bases and Tunnels. Sending 2 Troops to Tay Ninh will give the ARVN an opportunity to remove a Tunnel.

Next is to change most control, sending 1 Troop Saigon and 2 to Quang Tri. The last Troop could remove an enemy in either Saigon or Quang Tri (4,5,3) Sends it to Quang Tri

ARVN assault in Quang Tri and Tay Ninh. One NVA Troop is removed in Quang Tri. 2 VC Guerillas and a Base are removed in Tay Ninh (Aid 23 to 29). A roll of 5 removes the Tunnel marker there. (ARVN resources 27 to 21)

Card 15 (Vo Minh Giap) VC (Event)

This event is haloed for the VC, stating that if NVA is a player, to Choose Op plus Special. Since NVA is a bot, they will get the event. A halo around the NVA shows that there are special instructions for this event as they pertain to the NVA.

The instructions state to March to US bases if possible. Thus, the marches will be Quang Tri to Hue, Southern Laos to Pleiku, and Kien Phong to Saigon. March instructions still apply, so the NVA will leave enough pieces behind to maintain NVA control and 2 guerillas in base spaces.

In all three spaces, the NVA will attack. This removes 2 Police and 1 ARVN Troop in Saigon; 3 Police, 1 Irregular and US Base (Firebase Falcon) in Pleiku (1 NVA troop lost to attrition); 1 Police and 1 Troop in Hue. NVA control is established in all three destinations.

Card 15 (Vo Minh Giap) US (Assault+Airlift)

The US bot is heard screaming “This aggression will not stand!”, and prepares a hasty airborne assault.

Binh Dinh has a base that would be removed by Assault, so this will, fortuitously, be the US Operation.

The First Assault priority is to remove the most NVA control. There are 3 US troops beyond needed for COIN control or Ops in Quang Duc, and 2 more in (4,4,6) Quang Nam.

6 NVA control can be removed in Saigon and 2 in either Hue or Kien Phong. The tiebreaker here would be that more NVA casualties can be inflicted in Hue, so that will be the second LZ. 3 troops go to Saigon and 2 to Hue, for maximum NVA losses.

US assaults in Hue, removing 4 NVA troops and restoring COIN control; Quang Nam, removing 1 VC guerilla; Binh Dinh, removing 2 VC guerillas and a VC base; Quang Duc, removing 2 VC guerillas and 2 VC bases; and Saigon, removing 6 NVA Troops.

Card 16 (Plei Mei) NVA (Event)

NVA get another event that will allow them to push into the South. Again, this one has haloed instructions. The instructions are to March first to any US bases, and to Choose Op+ Special if less than 2 Pop will come under NVA control.

There are no US bases within marching distance from outside the South, so standard Marching rules apply.

There are not enough guerillas to form a group for a base, so we move onto getting a guerilla onto an LOC. (4,2,4) is Kontum, so 1 guerilla is moved from Sihanoukville to the Dak To/ Kontum LOC. This is a free move from anywhere outside of the South, so the Trail bonus moves can be used.

Now we look for the 3 spaces with highest population (2) and COIN control first.
Kien Giang is a definite, as it can be captured using only one moving group. Quang Tin could also be taken, but it is not in COIN control. By combining two groups Quang Tri can be taken; it is in COIN Control, so it will be the other March destination. If there was a third destination that had two population and no COIN control, it would have been the target to allow 3 destinations. 4 troops are moved into Kien Giang from the Parrots Beak, and 4 troops each form North Vietnam and Central Laos are moved into Quang Tri.

Since NVA attack priorities are to remove most enemies, Quang Tri will be targeted, removing, in order, 1 Irregular, 1 ranger, 2 ARVN Troops.

Card 16 (Plei Mei) ARVN (Train+Govern)

ARVN have 12+ pieces available, so they will Train. The first Train group will consist of 3 Troops and 3 Police. The first priority to place units is to gain COIN control, so these are placed in Saigon. (ARVN resources 21 to
18).

The next group consists of 1 Troop and 5 Police. These cubes are placed where a type is lacking. Since there are no ARVN Troops in Hue, Kontum or Da Nang ( 6,4,2) puts them in Hue. (ARVN resources 18 to 15).

The last group is 1 Ranger, placed randomly (2,3,3) into a city or base. An Loc gets this piece (ARVN resources 15 to 12).

Next ARVN will govern to get the most Patronage from Active support spaces. Da nang and Kontum are the only two choices, so they both shift to Passive Support; Patronage 16 to 18, Aid 29 to 27.

ARVN have already trained in 3 spaces, so they will not Train in Tay Ninh to place a Base. Instead they will Pacify for greatest shift without the US going over 45 points. Saigon shifting to Active support puts the US at exactly 45 points. (ARVN resources 12 to 9).

Card 17 (Rach Bai Rai) VC (Event)

The Event removes a die roll of ARVN/ US cubes from a lowland with VC.

There are 2 lowlands that contain VC, Quang Tin and Pho Bon. Since the VC will remove US pieces before ARVN, they will choose Quang Tin. No need to roll the die as there is only one piece there, which goes to casualties. One VC piece (a Base) is placed in Quang Tin.

Card 17 (Rach Bai Rai) US (Assault+Air Lift)

Scanning the board, the US can eliminate 6+ pieces with an assault, so this will be their action. Air lifting will aid in the assault priorities (removing NVA Control) , so that will be the accompanying activity.

The first priority of an assault is to first remove the most NVA control. Kien Phong, Kien Giang and Quang Tri all have NVA control and 2-pop each, so two of these will be the airlift destinations.

(6,4,6), (3,4,4) make Kien Giang and Quang Tri the airlift destinations. There are 6 US troops beyond COIN control in Binh Dinh and 4 excess in Quang Duc, so these will send troops. 4 troops fly to Kien Giang and 6 Troops to Quang Tri (to maximize NVA casualties). The Irregular is placed randomly (2,2,4) between the destinations, ending in Kien Giang.

4 NVA troops are eliminated in Kien Giang (restoring COIN control); 1 NVA Troop and 4 VC guerillas are removed in Saigon; 1 NVA Troop is eliminated in Hue; 3 NVA are removed in Quang Tri (COIN control is not restored, but NVA control is removed).

Card 18 (Main Force Battalions) NVA (Event)

This is a capability, so the NVA must roll less than 5 to take the event. They roll a 2, so the capability is put into play.

[No photo]

Card 18 (Main Force Battalions) ARVN (Patrol+Raid)

There are not 12+ ARVN available, so Training is out. Saigon can reach every city via LOC, so no patrol. Assault in Tay Ninh can remove a base, so ARVN will Assault.

Before Assault, ARVN will Raid. The first priority is to remove bases, which moving the Ranger from An Loc or Kien Phong to Tay Ninh will accomplish. If there wasn’t a third Ranger that could move into Kien Phong, this would be a no-brainer, but since there is, we will roll (3,1,3). The Ranger n An Loc moves in, activates and removes the VC Base. Now the Ranger in Kien Phong activates, removing 2 NVA Troops and changing control from NVA to COIN.

Now we have an interesting situation. There are no longer any places for the ARVN to assault, since the ranger removed the VC base in Tay Ninh. Therefore, ARVN will Patrol instead.

There are 7 ARVN cubes in Hue and 7 in Saigon, with VC guerillas on two LOCs that are both adjacent to Saigon, so 3 police are moved from each to these LOCs.

The next closet LOC to Saigon is Cam Ranh/ Da Lat. There are multiple spaces with Police at 4 ARVN cubes (4,3,1) Saigon contributes 1 Police; (2,1,6) Cam Ranh contributes 2 Police.

Finally, there is an NVA guerilla on Kontum/ Dak To. (4,1,5) Can Tho sends 2 Police; (4,3,1) Hue sends 1 Police to bring the total to 3 Police on the LOC.

Now we bring each city (strating with highest pop) to 3 + cubes with Troops and Police.

Saigon gets 1 Police from (6,6,6) Da Nang. (2,5,6) Cam Ranh gets 1 Police from Kontum. Can Tho gets 1 Police from (6,5,6) Da Nang. Finally, Da nang needs a Troop. Most cubes are in Tay Ninh, so 1 Troops is transferred to Da Nang.

All LOCs with enemies are now at 3 ARVN cubes, and all cities are in COIN control with police and 3+ cubes/SF.
ARVN assault at (3,2,6) Cam Ranh Loc (tie broken by d6 roll of 2) eliminating guerilla on Cam Ranh/ Da Lat. (ARVN resources 9 to 6).

Card 19 (MACV, Monsoon) US (Event)

US takes the Event. It has a halo; so special instructions state that with JFK policy, US will Advise.

No ARVN assaults, Irregular activation or Ranger Activation will remove enemy pieces, so we move to sweep. There are no eligible targets, so Aid 27 to 33.

ARVN now look down their flowchart to see what Special would accompany a theoretical Op. They do not have 12+ available; Saigon is connected to all cities through LOCs,; there are no assaults possible. Next would be sweep, but that is not allowed, so we revert to Assault; this gives Raid as the special Activity.

Moving the Ranger from Kien Giang to Sihanoukville adds most COIN control(0) and eliminates an underground NVA guerilla.

Card 19 (MACV, Monsoon) VC (Rally+Tax)

VC have no terror opportunities at support, and have 12+ Guerillas available, so they will Rally.

1) They have no groups of 4 to place bases at.

2) They then place Guerillas in 2 spaces with ARVN cubes and no VC (2,3,6) places one guerilla in Binh Dinh (VC resources 1 to 0)

VC have run out of resources, so they will Tax.

There are only 2 Tax possibilities, Bihn Tuy and Binh Dinh, so they will Tax at both. (VC resouces 0 to 6)

2 continued) The only remaining eligible ARVN space is Tay Ninh (VC resources 6 to 5)

3) Next there are two spaces with VC bases and less than4 underground guerillas (Binh Tuy and Quang Tin). These each rally 3 guerillas. (VC resources 5 to 3)

4) 1 Guerilla at Quang Duc removes COIN control there (VC resources 3 to 2)

5) Finally, the last guerilla will be placed at a space that already has 1-3 VC guerillas: (2,2,4)BinhDinh (VC resources 2 to 1)

Card 20: Coup (Nguyen Khanh)

Victory: No faction at victory yet

Resources:
No sabotage on LOC’s. COIN control in Cambodia reduces Trail 2to1
ARVN: Aid 33+Econ 15 + 6 remaining resources to 54 total
VC: 3 bases + 1 remaining resource to 4 total
NVA: 2 for trail + 6 bases +1 remaining resources to 9 total
9 US casualties: Aid 33 to 6

Support:

US Pacify:
US can Pacify at Da Nang and Kontum, and will do so for 1-step at each (ARVN resources 54 to 48)

ARVN Pacify:
ARVN will not bring any space to Active support if US score greater than 45, so they have no eligible pacification spaces

VC Agitate:
There are 3 possible agitate spaces (Binh Tuy, Binh Dinh and Pho Bon) So VC will try to Agitate for maximum effect in each. Since VC only have 4 resources, they will Agitate for maximum shifts at Binh Dinh (2 steps), and Pho Bon (2 steps). Resources 4 to 0

Laos/ Cambodia Redeploy:
Ranger in Sihanoukville to Available

ARVN Redeploy:
Troops in Tay Ninh, Binh Dinh and Quang Tri must be redeployed.
There are no legal spaces that ARVN could redeploy Troops into to add COIN control.

Sending 1 Police from Kontum to Tay Ninh keeps COIN control there.
There are provinces that started in COIN control that do not have police.

1) 1 Police moved from Da Lat/ Cam Ranh LOC to Kien Phong

2) (2,3,3) sends 1 Police from Hue to Kien Giang (An Loc and Kien Nonh are not eligible because they are at 3 cubes/SF, already satisfying later redeploy condition)

3) (1,5,6) sends 1 Police from Kontum to Quang Nam

All provinces in COIN control now have 1 or more Police.
All cities have at least 3 Cubes

Remaining Troops are relocated (3,3,2) to Saigon.

NVA Redeploy: All NVA bases are in Control and all Troops are adjacent to COIN control.

Commitment:
US has 46 Available+Support, so they will not change policy (JFK)

1 Base and 1 Troop out of play; 2 Troops to Available.

US will send 2 troops to Vietnam to bring available to 15.

Qui Nhon and Da Nang are in COIN control with US pieces, but no Troops, so they will each receive 1 Troop.

Reset: No change in trail; cleanup markers; adjust eligibility.

Card 21 (Aces) US (Event)

US has highest score and is first on card. The roll was a 2 (not less than number of cards in ARVN leader box) so there will be no Trump.

US gets a free Airstrike outside of the South. There are no targets (all spaces have only Bases with underground guerillas). Trail 1 to 0.

[No Pic]

Card 21 (Aces) NVA (Rally + Infiltrate)

The only valid attack space for NVA will not add control or eliminate 4+ enemies, Base, or last COIN piece; NVA terror will not happen; NVA fulfills all three triggers for Rally, so that is what they will do.
There is nowhere to place a Base, so they will rally at bases with less than4 guerillas (all base candidates).

2 guerillas are placed at (2,4,2), (5,5,2), (1,3,2) The Parrots Beak, Southern Laos, Central Laos. (NVA resources 9 to 6).

Trail less than3, and 3+ NVA resources (Trail 0 to 1, resources 6to4). Infiltrate will add 4+ troops.

All three rally spaces tie for most guerillas so (3,1,4), (3,3,2) 3 troops each are placed in Southern Laos. Both of these spaces trade 2 guerillas for 2 Troops each.

Card 22 (Cu Chi) VC (Event)

Instructions for this event are to place maximum VC tunnels, so Binh Tuy is the receiving space. 2 Tunnels, 1 VC guerilla and 1 NVA guerilla are placed there.

Card 22 (Cu Chi) ARVN (Sweep + Raid)

There are not 12+ available ARVN, Saigon can reach all cities via LOCs, no assault options, so ARVN will Sweep.

First they will Raid. If the Ranger at Tay Ninh moves out, it will lose COIN control (even though Kien Phong could move in, so it will Raid in Place. Since Kien Phong cannot change control nor remove a Base, it will remove the most underground guerillas possible (2) by moving into The Parrots Beak.

ARVN can Sweep in place at Phu Bon (resources 48 to 45)

Now they will add as much control as possible. Sweeping into Quang Tri will add 2-pop, so all available Troops (1 from Hue and 1 from Da Nang) will sweep into Quang Tri (resouces 45 to 42).

Card 23 (TF-116 Riverines) US (Train + Advise)

Since the US is closest to victory, NVA rolls to see if they will trump. The target roll is 1. Their roll was 4, so they will not trump at this time.

Normally, the US would take the event. However, all Mekong LOCs and adjacent lowlands are enemy free, so they will choose Op + Special.

The only attack opportunity would only eliminate 3+. Sweep in place would not work, and there are no NVA controlled cities. Therefore, the US will Train with Advise.

First, the US will add Irregulars. Since it is JFK policy, they will place 2 Irregulars per candidate space.

Placing Irregulars at Quang Duc adds COIN control, so this space will get 2 Irregulars first. There are only three Irregulars left, and 2 candidate spaces, so (3,4,3) places 2 Irregulars in Quang Tri. The last remaining Irregular is placed in Quang Nam.

Next, ARVN resources 42 to 39, placing the ARVN Ranger in (5,5,6) Da Nang. Normally, with JFK policy, cubes would be placed, but none are available, so we place Rangers.

Now the US will Pacify. Since this is a Pacify that is going with a Train Op, the first priority is a space without Police. Quang Tri and Quang Duc both Qualify, the next condition of highest population breaks the tie, and Quang Tri will be pacified from Active Opposition to neutral (ARVN resources 39 to 33).

Now the US will Advise. There are no eligible ARVN Assaults, Active Irregulars or Rangers that can remove enemy pieces (cannot Advise in Train spaces). Also, there are no spaces where sweep in place can occur, so the US will just take Aid 6 to 12.

Card 23 (TF-116 Riverines) NVA (Attack + Bombard)

Event instructions are to Choose Op+ Special.

An attack in the Parrots Beak will remove the last COIN piece from a space, so the NVA will attack.

They have no Ambush opportunities, so the Special Op will be Bombard before the attack. One of the attack spaces is Quang Tri, so NVA will Bombard there first, sending 1 US Troop to casualties. The Parrots Beak cannot be Bombarded and there are no other spaces that contain NVA with enemies, so US will be Bombarded in (4,1,3) Kontum.

NVA attackes first in Cambodia, removing the Ranger, then attacks in Quang Tri, sending the 2 Irregulars there to casualties (NVA resources 4 to 2).

Card 24 (Nguyen Huu Tho) VC (Event)

VC places a Base and Guerilla in Saigon, stays eligible.

Card 24 (Nguyen Huu Tho) ARVN (Sweep+Raid)

Going down the list, there are not 12+ available ARVN, LOCs can get you from Saigon to any city, no Assault possibilities, therefore, ARVN will Sweep + Raid.

Raid is first, and there is only one Active Ranger, in Da Nang. It will move into Quang Tin and eliminate 2 underground VC.

ARVN sweeps in place in Saigon.

There are no more sweep in place possibilities, so they now will take as much COIN control as possible with an additional Sweep. There is one Troop in Qui Nohn that is available to Sweep (leaving 3 cubes behind), so it takes control of Phu Bon. (ARVN resources 33 to 27

Card 25 (Annam) NVA (Rally + Infiltrate)

Special instructions for this card for NVA state to Choose Op + Special.

Attacking in Quang Tri won’t add NVA control or remove 4+ enemies, and Terror isn’t happening, so they will Rally (since Trail less than 2).

There is nowhere to place a base. Also, there is no COIN control in Laos/ Cambodia.

The Parrots Beak has less than 2 NVA Guerillas, so it is the first Rally space (3 guerillas added). The next priority is at any NVA Base.

(1,6,3) Southern Laos gets 3 guerillas (NVA resources 2 to 0). There are no resources left for Trail improvement.

NVA will Infiltrate first where most guerrillas, placing 3 Troops in Southern Laos. Next Infiltrate is at 2 Bases, (5,4,2) Central Laos getting 3 guerillas. Now guerillas are exchanged for Troops (2 in Central Laos and 3 in Southern Laos).

Card 25 (Annam) VC (Event)

VC removes support from Hue and Da Nang. There are no adjacent spaces in support.
