Hey everyone,
I am giving some serious thought to hosting an annual meetup for NZ game designers. A place to playtest, meet other designers, workshop and learn from others in the industry.

Already posted here too:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/471167729584590

Currently I am thinking Feb/Mar. Leaning towards the first weekend of March. I know BattleCry happens around the 3rd weekend in Feb.

So, questions....

1. Any other conflicts for events in Feb/Mar?
2. I am based in Kapiti, but could host in Wellington or look to Auckland. How many people wouldn't come if it was in Kapiti/Wellington?
3. Saturday and Sunday event, or just the Saturday?
4. Other than playtesting prototypes, what else would you like to see at an event like this?

Really keen to hear from anyone who is keen, so please comment below.

Thanks!
Shem

I would be 100% for Wellington/Kapiti, and 80%+ for Auckland

Thanks Andrew!

I've also set up a google doc for game designers to meet up throughout the year...

Hi Shem, What is this group called on Facebook? It doesn't allow looking unless you are in the group.

Very keen for this! Joined the FB group and looking forward to more info. Kapiti is probably a stretch - Wellington is a good midpoint in NZ that's relatively easy to get to.

As a budding designer I'd be keen.

As well as prototypes I'd love to learn more about the manufacturing process, getting art done, how to approach playtesting...

Kapiti would rock as it's a short drive from Palmy but Wellington would be fine.

I think 1 day would be fine to start with and then judge if there is enough content/interest to spread over 2 days.

Great! There may be potential for a monthly Wellington meetup too. However, Matthew Thredgold is based just North of Levin and I'd be happy to travel to Palmy on an monthly basis if we could get a group started up there too - or even in Kapiti if we can't find any other Palmy folk. Monthly meetups would likely be just an evening (4-5 hours), rather than a full day or weekend. Then the annual event would be a big deal, bringing all the groups together.

Slightly off topic, but is there a geeklist of NZ designed games and/or designers?

I remember seeing one years ago, but haven't checked to see if it was updated.

I am happy to host an inaugural Mana-Kapi-Whenua (for lack of a better name) Game design day (or evening).

Got a new small card game to show.
Got a big weuro that's nearly ready too.

Steve, Shem?

You know I'm keen. Probably won't be looking to start up any monthly meetups till next year, but still keen meetup at some point before then if we can.

Link is now working - it's a closed group, so just request access and it'll be granted

I'm keen but I'm also 1 week away from launching my gigantic IT project that's been 5 years in the making.

Perhaps a weekend in mid December?
