In developing a fanmade expasion for Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game introducing the Space Wolves (check it here), I am coming across the following issue.
1) The game features several combat teams of 2 Space Marines;
2) Each team has a strong Marine with special abilities, and a "vanilla" Marine with normal abilities;
3) In attempting to improve the relevance of "vanilla" marines, I have created a mechanic where they add defensive value to their closest brothers in arms.

The question is: "What are the best words/expressions to label this novel mechanics, and specifically to refer to "Vanilla" Marines?"

Currently I am saying that:
- Vanilla Marines have a special trait, i.e., "Melee Fighter";
- Melee fighters may "assist" other defending Space Marines (an expression that I quite like).

I'd like to replace the Melee Fighter trait, as it is not specific of vanilla Marine only that they fight in close combat.

I hope the issue is clear, and thank you in advance for any advice!

Well it's 40k, so how about giving their defensive support ability a made-up Latin sounding name, 'Brotheribus Defendicus' or something. Then you can just refer to marines who have that ability, e.g. 'Vanilla marines.'

Funny proposal!
But isn't something in English that may suggest the same while not being "defending marine", "brother in arms"...?

Covering fire?

Why not refer to the vanilla guys as Marines and the other guys as Specialists?

this defense bonus is provided for melee combat (marines are engaged by swarms of aliens attacking in close combat. Vanilla marines helps close marines to defend against these attacks.

At that point, if a specialist is "something more" than a normal marine, and normal marines support defence, why should not specialist marine also provide defence?
