An article had been just published in Science Magazine (one of the best scientific journals) trying to answer this question. Very useful for all those interested in information related to this great game.

The sentence "There's no doubt that climate stressed the colony, but the emerging narrative is not of an agricultural society short on food, but a hunting society short on labor and susceptible to catastrophes at sea and social unrest." Not to brag, but the game narrative of "Greenland" anticipated this sentence, with worker placement for hunting plus a method to track climate change and social harmony. Of course, the game Greenland also adds the other two cultures, with the possibility of intermarriage between them (and thus a vastly different outcome).
