Hi Dom,

Set up: A fat carnivore species (FC) with a population of 5 has plenty to eat but the food has defensive horns. Initial attacker (FC)POP:5,4,3,2,1
1st attack: one(FC)dies, take 2 food.
(FC) POP 5,4,3(1 food), 2(1 food)

2nd attack: one(FC)dies, take 2 food. FC 2 dies but the food he has goes into my pouch. Food allocation for (FC) POP: 5,4,3(1 food)
now do you feed the top two or the unfed?
(FC) POP: 5,4(1 food), 3(2 food) or (FC)POP 5(1 food), 4(1 food), 3(1 food)
etc,
I can stop if the carnivores have at least one food, but could continue until all remaining (FC) have 2 food.
Choice of who dies is important to max food acquired. Do I have a choice as to which one is killed by the horned defense.

Although I don't see it specifically in the rules, we always have the bottom carnivore population card die when attacking a horned prey.

Since the rules say to feed your species from the top card down while eating, and carnivores kill the bottom population up, it seemed symmetrical that any carnivores killed by defensive horns would die similarly, from the bottom up.

After replying I saw that there was a similar question asked in the general forum, and Dominic the designer chimed in confirming populations get food from the top down and die of from the bottom up.

My reading is that he also confirms that fat animals first fill each population with one food before adding a second to any population, again from the top down.

No. Population is lost from the bottom up and fed from the top down.
