Do the retail boxes also contain the messed up rules? If yes, do retail buyers get the new printed rule book free?

The new printed rules don't exist yet and the retail edition is scheduled (from what i understand, anyway) to hit shelves any day now.

Edit: Asmodee says "now shipping", whatever that means:

Monolith has made no public statement about that. i rather doubt it, though.

The only official information is about the re-print of the rule book for pledgers who will ask for it.

Conan KS update #174 :

Regarding the new version of the rulebooks :

The 2nd version should be available mid-November in French, and in English before the end of November.- We will create a request form for those of you who want to receive a hard copy of the new rulebooks. This will be totally free of charge.

I hope they extend this to retail purchases. $120 for a game with a messed up rulebook is ridiculous.

While I don't disagree but I doubt they will do it. I have a shelf of games that sold and sold well with not the best of rulebooks and they aren't being replaced for free. I think the best people can hope for is a cheap update they can order online.

The rules are more scant than "messed up". The game isn't hard to learn. There are a few annoying omissions and the organization is, umm, "creative", but I've definitely encountered worse.

Why are the Kickstarter backers getting a free rulebook?

I kind of think this question answers itself - backers a getting a free rulebook because they backed the Kickstarter. That's also why they got a second box that had a bunch of extra stuff in it. It's also why they got to help playtest, in some cases, and why they got to offer feedback on the sculpts. It's also why they waited a lot longer than they thought they were going to, and why they are still waiting for the second part of their pledges.

It sounds like your question is really why aren't retail buyers getting a free rulebook, and since nobody has said yet that they are not, I don't guess I have an answer to your question at all.

I probably won't request a new rulebook. I've played three times now and not had any problems. Honestly, I'm not sure what all the fuss is about.

Because the point of KS is to reinforce preorders, to show people that you are better because you paid for something that doesn't exist yet, people who wait until the product is ready and reviewed should know that they are bad people. Only blind commercialism will serve!

The rulebook is really only lacking from the perspective of someone coming in with no knowledge of the game and isn't an informed buyer who watches videos.

I'd be happy with a pdf of official errata and clarification, maybe a rules reference that I could print out.

Feels like the bigger miss for them is this rulebook going out to retail where it's undoubtedly going to be purchased by people who try to learn it cold from the rulebook provided and are going to be pretty thoroughly confused on some things that they can't find the answer to.

Because we paid to have the game printed and developed. Without our help, there would be no game. Because until the game "hits the retail distribution chain" it is still a project under development.

Pick one. Live a happy life.

The rulebook is not messed up. It could have been better organized (and a FAQ and index would have been a good idea), but it makes sense and you can play the game out of the box just fine. People have greatly exaggerated how bad the rulebook is.

A lot of games have "living rulebooks" that are updated on their websites. Most companies don't send you a free printed rulebook every time they revise it.

I'm pretty sure that is not the point of Kickstarter.

They are giving the backers a rulebook because they have another KS currently running and don't want to piss off the group.

The rule book is not so bad really. It is the English skill sheets that seem to have a lot of translation errors and/or just plain unclear rules.

I've missed that keen insight and wit from the "days of high adventure" on Drake's Flames. Hope you will be doing a review on this site soon.

did you figured out that in the Wrath of Anu scenario you could attack from the bar with a melee attack into an adiacent area? Also with a "surplomb" bonus? you see, those kind of things aren't in the rulebook, so without any help from this forum i doubt that it could be possible to play the game correctly.

Perfectly stated, Drake.

We were able to play with little problem. It's a tremendous game, both in scope/option and fun-factor.

I am *super* glad I backed this.

Same here! Our first game was a nail biter to the end. I played the Overlord while my three teenaged sons played Conan and heroes in the first scenario. Conan struck down Zogar Sag and injured the giant snake, but not before the snake had dealt considerable damage to Conan. I then brought my pict warriors in to finish off Conan while Shevatas escaped with Zogar Sag's head. Unfortunately for them, that left the mage to carry out the unconscious governor's daughter. I inwardly smiled as I realized they thought they could just Lightning Storm the picts blocking the mage's exit or just grab Yselda and teleport out. Sure enough, Hadrathas exited the hut toasted my picts, and picked up Yselda, intent on teleporting out on his next turn before reinforcements arrived. The moment he realized (he knew...he just forgot) he couldn't teleport with that much weight on him was classic. I then brought in pict warrior reinforcements who hammered the mage with great stone axes until he capitulated. The lamentations of the women were music to my ears.
