Subject: How about some help with a counter squad, please rss

A friend of mine is playing the squad noted below ... any suggestions on how to counter it will be appreciated. Originally I thought dusting off a swarm might be the way to go in order to bump him early and often but the turret might chew them up fairly quickly, so I'm instead turning to the community for some ideas.

I have just about everything (or access to it), so feel free to post whatever it is you think might be a good squad to beat his. It could be either Empire or Scum. Thanks in advance.


VCX-100 (Kanan Jarrus) ... Ghost Title / Autoblaster Turret / Accuracy Correction / Tactical Jammer / 2x Recon Specialist

Attack Shuttle (Hera Syndulla) ... Phantom Title / Adaptability / Jan Ors

How does your friend fly this? What do the recon specialists do? The primary attack can use one focus, but the autoblaster and the zero evade dice won't make much use of them. What am I missing?

I believe the extra focus tokens he's trying to generate are for a couple reasons, based on the build ... 1) To use Jarrus' pilot skill to have the attacker roll 1 less die, and 2) to use Jan Ors to hand out evade tokens instead.

Deny Kanan his action and he won't have any focus tokens to spend.
So, bring blockers to cause collisions or some method of stressing enemy ships.

Just run triple X7 Defenders like everyone else. This is not an unbeatable list.

I like the stress idea. Perhaps something like this to start with:

"Dutch" Vander (23)
Twin Laser Turret (6)
R3-A2 (2)
Vectored Thrusters (2)
BTL-A4 Y-Wing (0)

Norra Wexley (29)
Tactician (2)
Vectored Thrusters (2)

Total: 66

Higher pilot skill than Kanan and work well together.

R3-A2 is no good on Dutch or with Vectored Thrusters due to the mountain of stress you'll end up with. Better to just put TLT and R3-A2 on a Gold Squadron Pilot to save on points.

One of my favorite lists is 4 Tie Bombers with Homing Missiles and either Long Range Sensors or Guidance Chips. I might go with LRS on this one. There are only 2 ships in the list (if docked) and picking 3 of 4 on the Ghost would work great. Just put the 4th on the A-wing to scare it a bit. Firing Homing Missiles with TL and Focus would put a lot of damage on the Ghost in the first turn.

Besides that, you can use a horde mentality. The Ghost with Autoblaster is designed to kill Aces. Don't bring Aces. Bring a lot of cheap ships that can shoot a lot or use ordnance. These can be 5 Kihraxz Fighters or a mix of Heavy Scyks and Kihraxz Fighters. Heavy Scyks with either Ion Cannons or Manglers. The Manglers would mean against such a large ship. The Ion Cannons would just make it easy to control the Ghost.

I use a "mini swarm" of four Z-95s plus a Kihraxz all with missiles to take out a Ghost at my local game store. I called the squad the Ghost Busters. Everybody takes a focus. The Kihraxz shoots first with Trace Missiles giving everyone a target lock (most likely on the Ghost). Then the Z's cut loose with their Homing Missiles with Guidance Chips. With a focus, target lock + guidance chips it's more likely than not that each Z will hit for four points of damage.

One of the things I enjoy about X-Wing is that for any given situation there is typically a good counter point. Finding the squad that is good against one thing is easier (and often more fun) but finding a squad that is good against everything is tough! The Ghost Buster squad works really well against a single large target, as it's intended to. It falls apart against another squad of smaller ships because there is no single obvious target for the Tracer Missiles and the subsequent barrage.

One of the most annoying things to see across the table when playing Kanan is Accuracy Corrector, because it totally nullifies your ability.

Something like this makes short work of this kind of Ghost (although struggles against other lists):

4x Tempest Squadron Pilot / TIE/x1 / Accuracy Corrector (21)

Good point! Mh... perhaps Horton to bring some hits in despite the stress, but a Gold is probably more efficient.
