21 December (Turn 6)

Normal, Poor, Any
Allied Air Points: 0
German replacements are 3AV, 1 Tiger, and 8 non-AV.
Allied replacements are 9AV and 12 non-AV.

The Allies win the first player roll, and choose to activate first. The clouds have rolled in and the mud has dried up; not the weather that the Allies were hoping for. The bulk of the US infantry replacements go to the 82nd, who also receive some much needed Tank Destroyer support.

82nd Airborne Division
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Pass
7th Armored is abandoned to try and make its own way out, while forces are pulled back north to defend against 1st and 2nd Panzer, and to protect the 82nd’s own MSR from Lehr. A barrage kills 2 steps of KG Krag (to 4). Fresh status is lost and there is no 2nd activation.

1st SS Panzer Division

Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Partial
KD Knittel places a recon OBJ on Trois Ponts, drops support on the 2/401 east of the village, and leads an attack that captures the hex and sends the defenders back to 0719 with a step loss. This now clears the road to allow the HQ to advance. The III/1 battalion drives off the unprepared 2/120 and takes the trail north of La Gleize, though with Traffic in the hex. The HQ relocates forward and both bridges over the Ambleve between Stoumont and Aywaille are captured intact. Tanks and infantry move to threaten the 82nd supply line. Fresh status is retained, but a 1 is rolled for 2nd activation, and the division is unable to launch a planned attack to cripple the Airborne.

3rd Armored Division
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Pass
Reasoning that tomorrow's reinforcements can deal with the threat of 1st SS Panzer, the 3rd Armored has two options; a strike against the open rear of 116th Panzer, or a drive south to engage Lehr and recapture Houffalize. In the end I decided that the 116th was over-extended and would wither away on its own. 3rd AD was ordered to retake March-en-Famenne en route to Bastogne. The city is retaken and a 2nd activation is gained.

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Partial
The advance continues along clear roads, approaching within 10km of Houffalize by the end of the day.

KG Peiper

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Partial
An opportunity is spotted to open a northern supply route to 116th Panzer, but Peiper’s HQ is badly deployed, and he take all morning to drive for Stavelot, restricting the advance of his impatient units. A 2nd activation is gained.

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Partial
Unfortunately two partial activations is not enough to overrun the 82nd's Train and open supply through Werbomont. Two battered remnant battalions of the 82nd are sent to the graveyard however. Fatigue remains at 1.

30th Infantry Division

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Fail
A flip is taken to reduce fatigue to zero, and the unprepared units near Stoumont flip to their deployed side.

2nd SS Panzer Division

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: +1
Activation: Pass
The Division forces its way over the Salm at Vielsalm, pushing back two weak paratroop battalions but unable to exploit due to the Traffic markers caused by the battles. Fatigue remains at zero and there is no 2nd activation.

1st Infantry Division

Fatigue: 3
SNAFU mods: -5
Activation: Partial
A trapped unit on Elsenborn Riadge retreats to join the parent Division, while two battalions re-take control of Malmedy, giving a 2 point barrage loss to the adjacent KG X. Fatigue remains at 3 and there is no 2nd activation.

150th Panzer Brigade
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Partial
The Brigade moves up to Malmedy, drops the defenders’ support, and shells the city to kill 3 of the 8 steps in the garrison. Without artillery it seems too risky to attempt an attack. Fatigue remains at 1 and there is no 2nd activation.

101st Airborne Division

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Partial
Buoyed by the news that 3rd Armored is only a few hours away, the Division continues to attack. 1/327 attacks KG Gutman and they each lose a step. Artillery also kills a step of II/FB. Fatigue remains at zero and there is a 2nd activation.

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Partial
Barrages finish off Gutman and kill another step of II/FB (to 4). Fatigure remains at zero.

26th Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: 2
SNAFU mods: -4
Activation: Fail
Aargh! Two failed activation is a row! They are really needed at Bastogne, so I risk the 50% change for a 2nd activation. The roll is a 3 and the Division spend a 2nd day immobilised.

84th Infantry Division
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -2
Set Prep Def
Activation: Partial
Units deploy to defend Namur, and a defensive barrage kills 2 steps from II/60 at Jambes. Fatigue remains at 1 and there is no 2nd activation.

Fuhrer Grenadier Brigade
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Pass
The Brigade engages the HQ of 10th Armored. The Panzer battalion engages and kills a step of the US recon, and sends the stack in flight westwards towards their Train. Two steps are lost in the retreat, and a barrage kills another step of the engineers. Fresh stautus is lost and there is no 2nd activation.

[Whoops - needed to move the FGB HQ forward 2 hexes towards Weiler to keep everything within CR]

CCA/9th Armored
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Partial
The Cavalry battalion is sent to drive the unsupported Germans away from Ettelbruck, killing 4 steps in a combination of attacks by fire and a heavy barrage. Fatigue increases to 1 and there is no 2nd activation.

12th SS Panzer Division

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Fail
Sigh. The roll for a 2nd activation is unsuccessful. I suppose you think the Allies are just going to surrender while you stand around Butgenbach looking menacing. There’s not even any fatigue to recover.

CCB/3rd Armored Division
Fatigue: 3
SNAFU mods: -4
Activation: Partial
TF McGregor drops support (against the odds) on II/19 and kills a step (to 1). TF Love follows up the success. Attacks by fire fail, but an attack supported by McGregor sends the SS battalion to the graveyard. TF Jordan exchanges step losses with the 9th SS Panzers. Fatigue increases to 4 and no 2nd activation is possible.

9th SS Panzer Division
Fatigue: 2
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Fail
Is this a mutiny! I take a flip to lower fatigue to 1. III/19 loses a step (to 4) due to isolation.

9th Infantry Division

Fatigue: 2
SNAFU mods: -3
Activation: Partial
A barrage kill 2 steps of II/20 (to 2). Fatigue remains at 2 and there is a 2nd activation. This is taken as a recovery to lower fatigue to 1.

3rd Panzergrenadier Division

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Partial (just!)
The Division drive the Norwegians back from the Malmedy road with heavy losses, though the JagdPanzers lose a step before succeeding in dropping support. Fatigue increase to 2 and there is no 2nd activation.

10th Armored Division
Fatigue: 2
SNAFU mods: -5
Activation: Fail
Take a flip and lower fatigue to 1

Thinking about the German supply problems I came up with an alternative. There is no way for 2nd Panzer to clear the Houffalize road now the 101st have an entire Regiment around Noville, so Lehr and the 116th need to look for another supply route. There are a lot of cut-off US troops blocking the roads to St Vith and Clervaux. They can probably be cleared but not in a single turn. The best option would seem to be linking up with 1st SS and tracing back through Stavelot, except for that damned garrison in Malmedy still blocking the main road for supply purposes. Still, this seems to be the best option. Can I attack Malmedy with another formation? Only 3 FJ can possibly get there today, so let’s see what they can do.

3rd Fallshirmjager Division
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Pass
Wahoo - at least one general is on the ball. It’s creating big coordination problems for next turn with 150th Panzer, but the paratroops hurl themselves at Malmedy with a 3pt destruction barrage. Each defending battalion loses a step, but as expected the attacker only succeeds in losing 2 steps against the city walls. Fatigue remains at 1 and there is no 2nd activation.

7th Armored Division
Fatigue: 2
MSR Blocked 1
SNAFU mods: -7
Activation: Fail
I don’t roll for a 2nd activation.

The 116th would need at least one full and one partial activation to regain supply lines via Werbomont. Lehr could possibly do it with a single partial, but realistically would need a full or 2 partials. Both formations would be rolling at -7 SNAFU, so it doesn’t seem too likely. Let’s try for Lehr.

Lehr Panzer Division
Fatigue: 2
MSR Blocked 2
SNAFU mods: -7
Activation: Fail
Every unit loses a step - which sends 1/901 to the graveyard. This was blocking the supply road to the central Allied formations, but fortunately 2nd SS Panzer now has ZoCs on the road as well.

[At this point I'm actually part way through turn 8, but have discovered that I misinterpreted the MSR Blocked isolation loss rules. You don't lose a step from each unit in a formation with an MSR 2 Blocked marker. You lose 1 ADDITIONAL step providing they are already losing steps for being our of CR or having no safe path to the HQ. This would make a large difference to the losses suffered and the tactics chosen against cut-off units so far, but I've decided to carry on playing anyway.]

2nd Infantry Division
Fatigue: 1
MSR Blocked 1
SNAFU mods: -6
Activation: Fail
I don’t roll for a 2nd activation.

277th Volksgrenadier Division

Fatigue: 0
Drop Prep Def
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Partial
A barrage kills a step of 2/38 (to 3). Fatigue remains zero and there is no 2nd activation.

CCR/9th Armored Division
Fatigue: 2
MSR Blocked 1
SNAFU mods: -7
Activation: Fail
I don’t roll for a 2nd activation.

12th Volksgrenadier Division

Fatigue: 2
SNAFU mods: -3
Activation: Recovery
There is no 2nd activation.

106th Infantry Division
Fatigue: 0
MSR Blocked 1
SNAFU mods: -5
Activation: Partial
The surrounded HQ retreats to Hinderhausen, and the 2 surviving battalions pull west out of contact with German units.

326th Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Partial
Battalions move through Hofen to take over duties screening 9th ID and free up 9th SS to advance. The II/751 directs flak and artillery against the 2nd ID’s 2/38, reducing it to a single step. Fatigue remains at 1 and there is no 2nd activation.

CCB/9th Armored Division

Fatigue: 2
MSR Blocked 1
SNAFU mods: -7
Activation: Partial
The remaining tanks fight their way through I/124 of the 18VG with a shock attack, losing a step in the process. The HQ retreats west towards Beho. Fatigue remains at 2.

62nd Volksgrenadier Division

Fatigue: 3
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Partial
Infantry moves to surround the battalion of the 106th, and artillery kills a step. No attacks are made, as the Division wants to minimise fatigue gain. Fatigue remains at 3 and there is no 2nd activation.

112th/28 Regiment

Fatigue: 0
MSR Blocked 1
SNAFU mods: -5
Activation: Fail
The remaining battalion deploys to protect the HQ.

18th Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: 2
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Pass
Units switch to unprepared and march rapidly in pursuit of the 2nd SS Panzer. A barrage sends the 1/424 battalion of the 106th to the graveyard. Fatigue remains at 2 and there is no 2nd activation.

99th Infantry Division

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -3
Set Prep Def
Activation: Partial
Infantry battalions take losses retreating back to defend the HQ and escaping the eastern pocket. A barrage kills 1 step of the I/26 (to 5). Fatigue remains at zero and there is no 2nd activation.

560th Volksgrenadier Division

Fatigue: 2
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Partial
The division races west toward Houffalize, using the back trails to avoid confusion with 2nd Panzer. A second activation is rolled and used for recovery, lowering fatigue to 1.

4th Infantry Division

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Partial
There is no movement, and artillery kills a step of I/423 (to 3). Fatigue remains at 1 and there is a 2nd activation.

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Partial
Continuous barrages kills another 2 steps of the luckless 212VG battalion (to 1). Fatigue remains at 1.

2nd Panzer Division
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -3
Activation: Partial
The Recon and Mk IV battalions are recalled from north of Houffalize and move to surround the Airborne around Noville. The Panther Battalion drops support and kills a step of 3/502 (to 3), and the follow-up attack by panzer grenadiers is wildly successful, sending the battalion to the graveyard. The II/3 panzers drop support on 1/327, and attacks by fire reduce it to 3 steps. KG vonBohm leads another well-executed attack that wipes out the glider unit. Fatigue increases to 2 and a 2nd activation is gained.

Fatigue: 2
SNAFU mods: -4
Activation: Fail

109th/28 Regiment

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Partial
A barrage kills 1 step from I/914 (to 1). Fatigue remains zero and there is no 2nd activation.

Fuhrer Begleit Brigade

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -3
Activation: Fail
The fail is accepted but no 2nd activation is gained.

CCB/10th Armored

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Partial
TFs Cherry and O’Hara pound away at a battalion of 5FJ to little effect. Fatigue remains at 1 and a 2nd activation is gained.

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Partial
This time the attacks by fire are more successful, and L/13 is reduced to 2 steps. Fatigue remains at 1.

116th Panzer Division

Fatigue: 3
MSR Blocked 1
SNAFU mods: -7
Activation: Fail

212th Volksgrenadier Division

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Partial
A Barrage kills a step of 2/12 Battalion (to 2). Fatigue remains at 1 and a 2nd activation is rolled.

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Partial
The barrage is ineffective. Battered troops pull back to be replaced by fresher units. Fatigue remains at 1.

276th Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Partial
Attempts to pick on TF Luckett with the attached flak fail. Fatigue increases to 2 and there is no 2nd activation.

352nd Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Partial
The battalion thrown back from Ettelbruck attacks TF Riley, driving it back on the 10th Armored HQ with 2 step losses (to 4). Fatigue remains at 1 and there is a 2nd activation which is used to Recover.

5th Fallshirmjager Division
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Partial
With a full activation the formation would have tried to surround TFs Cherry and O’Hara, but a partial just won’t cut it. The Flak 88s open up at Cherry but cause no damage. A barrage causes a step loss to O’Hara (to 3). Fatigue remains at 1 and there is no 2nd activation.

79th Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: +2
Activation: Pass
The Division takes the Bitburg road towards Vianden. A 2nd activation is gained.

Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: +2
Activation: Pass
The formation is able to reach Vianden in a single day’s march, unfortunately causing coordination problems with the Train of Fuhrer Grenadier Brigade.
