Girl Genius is in essence, XXXenophile with two card types removed.

Gizmos, or cards that gave you no points when popped, but had continous effects after being popped, were removed as well as Settings whose effects take place when they are revealed on the board.

The changes have very little effect other than to allow an easier time coming up with expantion cards for Girl Genius.

I disagree. Girl Genius is XXXenophile without the CCG element. The designer exploited this to make some of the alternate ways to win depend on the card mix, and I think it's a vastly better game for it.

XXXenophile's appeal isn't really in the gameplay, and I think GG is a reasonable game to play, even if it will never be one of my favorites.
