My oldest son recently turned four and one of my gifts for him was a copy of Froggy Boogie. I paid $25 online and was not at all disappointed in that price once we opened the game. The pieces are very nice and everything is made of sturdy wood. The game includes various colored baby frogs, lily pads, a "home" lily pad, two-tone momma frogs and dice. Every single item is wood, right down to the eyes on the momma frogs.

The 11 small lily pads are arranged in a circle with the momma frogs in the center. The large pad goes out on the outer ring with the little pads. The large pad is "home" and the baby frogs want to make one lap around the circle and back home before the momma frogs catch them and put them to bed.

Players select their colors for the baby frogs and start at home. Each turn, the player rolls two dice which have colors on them instead of numbers. Whatever two colors come up, the player finds the momma frog (they are two-toned with one base color and one stripe) that matches those colors. The player picks one eye on the momma frog to lift up and look on the bottom. If the eye is blank, the momma frog did not catch the baby frog player. If the eye shows a frog, the momma frog woke up and caught the baby frog, who has to stay on the pad he/she was on to start the turn. If you continue to reveal blank eyes, you keep hopping along. First player to home wins, with the others continuing along.

The simple mechanics are easy for kids and fun. The game helps with lots of hidden teaching tools like counting, color recognition and memory. This last one is perhaps the best part as my four-year-old would take his time trying to remember which eye was the "frog eye" on ones that had already been revealed.

I saw all the positive reviews for this game here on the geek and I have to say I am a believer. I am hoping this kicks in my oldest's "game gene." The game is very well made and will be fun for a wide age range. About the only (minor) complaint I could see would be that the contents have to be arranged just-so for everything to fit back in.

Overall, HIGHLY recommended for families with younger children.

Not only are people taking the time to compliment this game, I think it is striking that no one so far has had any disagreement whatsoever with what has been written. There is not so much as an "above average" review let alone one that considers it average or less.

The simplicity of this game makes it fully accessible to three-year-olds, yet there is still a bit of mechanic to it to teach some good skills.

This game made the difference for one of my four-year-olds, who now plays other games as well, particularly PitchCar. An impatient, short-focused boy, he now is a good player that waits his turn and stays "in the game." That first game can be oh so important.
