Am I a man or am I a muppet? If I'm a muppet then I'm a very manly muppet!
mbmbmbmbmb
The year was 1999... Prince (or, at that point, the Artist Formerly Known As Prince) was still telling all of us to party like it was that chronological year. Y2K was the all the rage - many people were stockpiling water, food & medical supplies in preparation for The End of the World As We Know It (glancing R.E.M. reference). I, on the other hand, was stockpiling games.

And game statistics. You see, my practice of collecting "five & dime" gameplay lists began early that spring, as a post from Steve Zanini on the rec.games.board newsgroup set me off:

Quote:
Anyone familiar with SUMO magazine, would also be familiar with the 5 & 10 list. This is a listing of the games you have played either 5 or more times or 10 or more times. Think this would be a good way to re-cap what you played frequently in 1998.

I found the posts that followed to be intriguing and compiled them to produce a "Most Played" list of 1998. Then I did it again the next year... and the next... and it slowly but surely took on a life of it's own.

From the miniscule number of gamers in 1998 (16) to the huge response in 2005 (198!), the Five & Dime lists have snowballed into a very interesting way to track gaming trends, albeit only in the online community of "designer" game players & collectors.

If you'd like to participate, please send the games you've played five to nine times (nickels) and 10+ dimes (dimes) to fluffdaddy@gmail.com. Please use "five & dime" in the subject line.

Also, if you're using the Geek's five & dime utility, please note that it does NOT combine games & expansions. You'll need to do that yourself. (To find this "wonder button", go to your Profile, then click on "Stats". One of the links there will create a Five & Dime list for you.)

Thanks - I'll publish the results to my blog in February. If you'd like to see last year's results, check out:

http://akapastorguy.blogspot.com/2007/02/five-dime-2006-reca...

Update to answer some common questions:

1. I'm just counting the base game, not the expansions. If you played 10 games of Settlers, 5 with Seafarers, that would be "Settlers - 10." If you played 5 games of Settlers, all of them with Seafarers, that would be "Settlers - 5."

2. I'll be taking submissions until January 20th, which should give me time to process the data & get it all posted by the 1st of February.

3. Please go ahead & give me kid's games that you've played 5+/10+ times. You, I assure you, are not alone. (I played 20+ games of Zingo this year.)

Happy New Year!

Thanks for doing this Mark! It's a great little list to look over each year.

Maybe an Admin could sticky this to the front page?

Predictions: Cash n' Guns has a major surge, Ra has a down year for the first time in years, and Race for the Galaxy is the shining Essen release.

Either/or - the Geek format (once you eliminate expansions & take it out of HTML) works really well. With the number BEHIND the names of the games, it's really easy to drop into a spreadsheet & sort.

I never quite finished the last Apples Project (there's a couple of things I wanted to do that didn't get done.)

One of those was to compare the Apples Project to the Five & Dime results... so, I guess with Dr. Dale prodding me, it might actually happen.

The results are starting to pour in... and there's already an unexpected trend:

More than one of you are having trouble spelling "five & dime"... yes, that's right, I've received 2 different posts labeled "five & dim" - which, I'm hoping, is not a reference to my personal mental capacity.

Carry on... keep those virtual cards & letters coming!

Drop out "Hey! That's My Fish" and that sounds like a pretty good gaming night to me.

There's at least another 30 results left for me to log - and that's just on DAY ONE. Mad spreadsheet skillz, don't fail me now!robot

Alex gets 10 extra points for getting the answer correct.

You may add them to any game you want - just don't expect the people playing with you to recognize my authority as the Bestower of Extra Points.

While this is interesting, it gives a huge weight towards light, fast games. You could crank out 30 games of No Thanks in the same amount of time as 4 games of Twilight Struggle. Heavier games should get more weight. It means a lot more that someone dedicated the time for 4 heavy games than dozens of featherweights.

Yes, I know this is outside of the scope or even possibility of the survey, but it helps explain why Paris Paris was the #1 game one year.

You're correct, Dan - the Five & Dime reports tend to honor the filler & super-filler games over the weightier games.

I'll see if there's a way for me to highlight "weightier" games this year...

I agree that I can crank out many plays of No Thanks or Bananagrams in the same time it takes to play Axis and Allies or Talisman, but I would not consider the following leaders to be light filler games (in my game group, these are typically the meaty games that are played).

Ra, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan, Yspahan.
