Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Mark Haigh-Hutchinson has lost his battle with Cancer. He died yesterday afternoon, survived by his wonderful wife and two daughters, all gamers, I might add.

He was a beautiful human being and we can be thankful for all the lives that he touched, while on this earth.

I know that the hobby of boardgaming and the community here at the Boardgamegeek meant the world to him, so I thought I should pass along an excerpt from his wife's letter to his friends and family.

Quote:
Dear Friends,

While email seems like the wrong way to let people know this, I did not want to call each of you. I could not possibly bear to tell this story over and over again right now. Mark passed away at Christopher House in Austin Texas yesterday at 3:44 pm while I held his hand.

My mother and the Hospice nurse were with him and I when he finally left this life and entered the next. Mark's last day was comfortable in sharp contrast to the last week of his life. The whole team that was involved with his care over the last few days were wonderful. They treated him with kindness, respect, and did everything they could to make him comfortable. They never waited for his pain to increase, they just kept on top of it the whole time.

Mark was so sedated by pain medication the last 2 days of his life, I really did not feel that he knew I was there, but when he was taking his last few breaths, a tear trickled down his cheek. I can not tell you how that effected me. I really feel that Mark was sad to die, but I know that he was accepting of his death. He would have done anything to beat this cancer, but there was no way it could be beaten. He made the decision to not have any more treatment, and that decision was strongly supported by myself and his doctors.

Some of you that I have sent this email to may not have known that Mark was even ill. He went to NAMC October 15th 2007, stayed there for about 8 weeks after being dx with Pancreatic Cancer that had spread to many other places in his body, including his liver, left kidney spleen and colon. We knew that his prognosis was poor, but were hopeful that his other wise good health and youth would help him fight this battle a little longer.

Mark came home from that first hospital stay December 5th and was able to spend the holidays with us. I had to take him back to the ER last Wednesday because I could no longer control his pain at home. That hospital stay was very difficult. We signed his care over to Hospice on the Friday, he went to Christopher House Monday afternoon, and about 24 hours later died there.

My heart is breaking, but I am so relieved that Mark is no longer in pain. I have never had to endure something so difficult before, but all the support, help, love, phone calls, cards, meals, gifts, visits and good wishes from you all has been incredibly helpful.

Love,
Melanie

Thank you to all the people that enriched his life,

.k

Edit: A big thanks to Aldie for adding the Memorial feature to the site. Please click on Mark's name above to honor his memory and sign the guestbook for his family.

except that I'm very sorry about this loss and that I wish strength to his family and friends.

personally, i think when we thumb up this topic, we thumb up his memory, so it's ok to do it.

makes you wonder how many bggeeks die with no one telling us about it.

Sue and I met Mark when he was on a trip round the UK in 2005, shortly after we opened our shop.

He stayed and played a game of Ra with us.

Although we only met him for a couple of hours, we both enjoyed his company and were glad he'd stopped by.

He was one of life's nice guys.

Our thoughts go out to his family.

My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Having just gone through this last week with my wife's Aunt, I know how hard this is on everyone. Words of support and encouragement mean more to the family than people realize and I hope that knowing how much everyone cares gives the family some needed peace and comfort during this very sad time.

I would like to extend my condolences as well to the family that will miss their father, husband, and so much more. I did not know Mark or the family but I am sorry for their loss.

The thing about love is that death itself cannot stop it nor diminish it in any way; love continues on in the life of those that loved Mark.

Wow, that is very sad.

While I didn't know Mark personally, I've often thought of how great a loss it is when a member of the community passes away. My condolences to those who must go on without him.

I am sad to see him go, my condolences.

I never met him, however I did randomly suggest when it was posted he was ill we pick him up one of his two wishlist games, both of which were quite expensive and rare.

I am sad to say, I got several responses from fellow geeks who felt like they wanted to do the same and pitch in, and it just never materialized.

Very sad to see you go, sir. Happy trails.

Deeply saddening news. My condolences go out to his family and friends.

Although I did not know Mark personally I'm certain that in a community such as this he touched people that he didn't know and will be missed but remembered.

My condolences, too. My Dad went in a similar fashion.

I am sure Mark is up there in the great game room in the sky playing all kinds of board games with other BGG gamers we have lost...

Actually, you'll be happy to know, it did materialize, in a way. Your post was one of the suggestions that convinced me to do this:

Gift for Mark Haigh-Hutchinson

So thank you for that.

Such things are always very sad. I did not know him, but I offer my condolences and my absolute understanding, as my father is battling cancer right now. (in fact was unable to read the letter in full. I couldn't continue after the holding the hand thing. *sigh*)

Damn you, cancer! *shakes fist*
