After playing Tumblin-Dice a few times a friend and I realized it would be very easy to modify the game. I grabbed a few pieces of paper and started drawing circles (later changed to computer printed circles).

Here are the changes we made:

- Beyond the left/right 4x pads, we created large NEGATIVE circles (-1x Dice and -2x Dice).

- Four inches past the center 4x pad, we created a large 5x Dice circle.

- Between the 4x pads and almost at the edge of the 3x drop-off, we added two circles labeled "Roll all OFF dice again." When a player's die lands completely inside this circle the player picks up that die and any other dice that have rolled off the board and adds them to the dice in his hand. Play continues with the next player and alternates until all players are out of dice.

Here's a snapshot of a game in action with our modifiers:

What I like about the set-up is that with a marker and nice circle the variations you can create are almost unlimited.

Since this photo was taken we've added a very small 10x circle just beyond the center 4x pad.

We also played a game with two tables of different heights - anything that fell off the 4x pads fell 18" inches to a coffee table that had -4x and -5x circles.

I've also added a 10 sided die to each player's set of four dice. That oddly shaped die creates for some interesting, rather uncontrolled rolls.

Yes, it is easy to modify Tumblin Dice, which is a good thing.
It doesn't necessarily mean the modifications would be a good thing for the game.

Of course, knock yourself out changing your game, but I'm just giving you impressions of your proposed variants:

The -1 and -2 penalties for going after the 4x level would simply punish someone more than they are already for going too long. Currently, they lose the score for that die - you are proposing a penalty that could wipe out all their scoring for the entire round.
Do you really want to make players avoid shooting for the exciting 4x levels?

The 5x circle is the best of your variants. It would cause harder-than-normal throws down the middle. This would cause lots of "attacks", but it may well push an opponent's die off and INTO the 5x circle.

The re-roll all off dice is not a good variant, IMO. Those areas are some of the most-missed on the whole board. Dice always seem to split those uprights. So rewarding something that often happens normally, seems unneccessary. It basically acts as a reset, boosting scores. Someone who misses a lot would be heped more, so I guess it's a handicap/catch-up-with-the-leader variant.

It sounds like the 2-table variant would similarly demotivate players to attempt the 4x spots. Causing logjams and blockers in the first 3 levels (boring).

You would also have to make a rules arbitration (that may be tricky) to determine whether each die counts or not in those circles :
If it's touching at all.
If it's halfway in.
If it's all the way in.

Have you looked at these variants?

They are the best ones that I've read yet for Tumblin Dice, and would love to hear anyone's feedback that tries them out.
And the polyhedral (gamer's) dice simply increase the already-significant luck factor. This could be good or bad, depending on the player's preferences.
