After a solid game of Saint Petersburg, we were looking for something to play. For some reason I opened my mouth, and the words "Great Khan Game" and "Lets play it." came out. Everyone expressed an almost morbid interest in playing the game. So CJ briefly explained the rules, and we went from there. We missed some of the more obscure rules, and commented that the Great Khan Game was complicated just to be complicated. The rules were horribly organized. But we plowed on. As is typical, he that controls Isle Broddick invokes the wrath of all other players. For some reason, this game came off rather flat. Aside from my vice grip control of the Frozen Waste (with the Reindeer leaders), no one else seemed able to must much of a presence. Ugh.
There were only a few coups and only a few conflicts and the game progressed rather rapidly. In the end, even though Matt was wiped out by the Peasant Revolt early, victory was his (never mind the fact that I was wiped out, aside from the Frozen Waste, by a last turn peasant revolt).
When you boil it down, the Great Khan Game is in essence a rummy game with about 12 different suits. Its rather hard to collect for that many suits. I place the Great Khan Game just barely above Munchkin as far as game play is concerned. I have good memories of playing the Great Khan Game on more than one occasion as a high-schooler.
I'll play it again, but next time, there will be alcohol. Then it will be a great game.
