As a kid I loved checking out books from the library on card games and other classic games. Sometimes I liked reading about different games more than I actually liked playing them. When I came across a 1969 hardback edition of this book second hand back in 1992, I credit it with reminding me of my interest in games and opening up a new chapter of the hobby in my life.

This book is not a Hoyle. It is a book in celebration of games, game makers and game collectors. It is written by Sid Sackson, who most people in the hobby know for his Aquire, Sleuth, Can't Stop and a number of other favorites. There are 38 games, some by Sid, some by his friends, and some collected (like this book) from dusty book bins and foreign markets. Many of them have showed up as games in production. Focus, by Sackson, was published by Milton Bradley and Parker Brothers. "Blue and Grey" and "Crossings" showed up years later in his "Book of Classic Board Games" by Klutz Press.

I have played quite a few of these games, and many of them are very enjoyable. My favorites are Mate, Bowling Solitare (which I have on my palm pilot!), Suit yourself, and a number of pencil and paper games that put "Boxes" to shame. In with the games is a mixture of history, lore and insight by one of the classic game designers. This book is a must-have for people who love playing and creating board and card games.
