ZAP!

Tim's first trip lands him in 1917 in Verdun - at the bottom of a shell-hole! That's gotta be confusing. It actually makes the battle much easier as it gives Tim a heightened defence. Falling shells give him a bit of trouble throughout the game, but they also account for a couple of French enemies - two others Tim picks off without much trouble, and then he conjures the Flux, opening the gateway to the next battle. An unfortunate Frenchie blunders neatly into the Flux and so comes along for the ride when Tim finally emerges from his shell-hole and enters the Flux...

It's Little Big Horn, 1876, and Tim thinks this is going to be easy - his modern weaponry will make mincemeat of the primitive attackers. The problem is he has 13 foes to contend with this time, plus the hapless French soldier who came along for the ride. The rules suggest that the Sioux warriors should not attack the French soldier, but this seems unrealistic, so I allow a die-roll to determine whether the Sioux warriors move towards him or Tim. Indeed one of the Sioux takes out the unfortunate and no doubt bewildered French soldier. Unexpectedly Tim finds this battle much more difficult. The Sioux can only inflict 1 point of damage on Tim, but they keep coming at him, and from all directions. Tim is quickly surrounded and, in a panic, uses up one of his precious grenades - it proves very effective, though, taking four attackers out of the game. Tim has to be much more mobile in this battle, and still comes very close to death as the accuracy of the bowmen almost proves decisive. But gradually Tim picks them off, and when there's only four left he finally has the opportunity to conjure the Flux. He then rests and recovers some endurance, and after rubbing out another Sioux warrior he's into the Flux...

ZAP!

Back to 1241 and Liegnitz, and though there are only five enemies the're big, tough Mongolian horse archers and they move fast. Tim scarpers to the clear edge of the map and wait for them to come flying at him. This is a much swifter battle than the previous ones - the mounted Mongols attack at great speed, but fortunately not all at once, and Tim is able to take them out with his trusty M16, but even so they land some painful blows and Tim comes within a couple of Endurance Points of ending his great journey. He kills all five and so has the time to align the Flux, which gives him a chance of returning to the present. However...

ZAP!

He gets his first trip into the future, and lands right in the middle of Rollerbrawl! The scenario booklet is a bit light on detail, but I assumed Tim had landed in the middle of a future sport arena, as in the movie. My interpretation was that these guys would be zipping around the arena trying to take each other out, so I allowed the possibility that they would attack each other as well as Tim. This, along with the unpredictable actions of the Brawlball, allowed Tim to survive this battle which lasted only a few turns, until Tim was left alone with the Brawlball. Tim paused to recover a bit of Endurance, but this proved risky as the Brawlball attacked him and he had to immobilise it with the M16. Still this at least gave him time to align the Flux...

ZAP!

Back into the past, Guadalajara in 1937, the Spanish Civil War, and 11 Italian soldiers to contend with. Fortunately they mostly massed at the northern edge of the map, so Tim dashed into a clear corner of the map, taking out one rifleman with a single shot. As his opponents were not particularly aggressive Tim thought he would have plenty of time to conjure the Flux and escape without much of a fight. But then a lucky shot from distance and snake-eyes on the combat results table and a 'Kill' results.

Tim's great trip ends suddenly and ignominiously.

Thanks for the session report. I played this a lot in college back in the 80s but haven't played it in years.

The Little BigHorn scene was always certain death for my timetripper. He never survived it.

The other tough ones I remember were Napoleonic Wars and ACW.
