Mr. HomoLudens: Well, I just spent a week at a cottage north of Toronto and played some games. Oddly enough, BGG user Ender Wiggins (EndersGame) and his family were at the cottage next door, so we decided to let him and wife play too. Sometimes we even let one or two of his kids play. Yes, the man has kids, although they don't often appear in his many, many photos. We did not let him take any pictures of our games, because the man's made enough GG already.
Mr. Ender: There's nothing like being on vacation and discovering that the random person in the cottage next door is a fellow gamer. Razzia was Game #13 in the many game sessions (see the first here) that resulted from this amazing discovery.
The Vikings hijacked most of our game time in the second week of our vacation, but we did manage to get in one game of Razzia! with Mr. Ender, Daughter #1, and Son #2. In some ways, Razzia reminds me of Vikings: there's an auction, and it packs a lot of interesting choices in a quick game time. I narrowly beat Daughter #1 with scores of 48 and 44 points respectively, and Son #2 scored an unfortunate 11 points.
Those familiar with the game will be aware that it is a more compact and rethemed version of the classic auction game Ra (without disaster tiles), but with a Mafia theme. Razzia! would not appeal to everyone, but if you enjoy auction games, there's a good chance you'll like it. For the short time it takes to play, it packs in a lot of fun, tension, and tough choices. The rules and gameplay are quite straight-forward, but the trick is to know when and what to bid in order to get the combinations of cards that will score you the most points! The theme is quite humorous too. Razzia! also works with two players (games take 15-20 minutes) but there's more luck of the draw, and so I think it's best with more players and more interaction.
I'm glad we managed to get one game of this in, and would rarely decline playing a game of Razzia!. For enhanced play, I highly recommend playing with a custom turn marker, i.e. toy police car, as pictured here:
