The link below contains the Living Rules, the Living Charts (or whatever we call an updated Play-Aid card), and Kevin Coombs' superb Vassal module.
http://www.nrandall.com/blackbeard.html
Note: Final update to Rules file and Play-Aids file - Monday, Sept 22, 11:30 EDT. Nothing major, just a few final fixes. If you printed before, no need to do so again. If you haven't as yet, then rest assured these are the final versions, the ones that will see print in the Reprint of the boxed game. Note that the issues raised by Merric below have been corrected in this final file.
See the Developer's Notes (p. 29) for a list of the major updates and amendments in the rules. There are other smaller ones, but these show the main points.
Updates and amendments are in blue text and with a vertical black bar beside them in the margins - so you can print in color or with the "print all text black" option on your printer.
Note that these living rules will be those that appear in the reprint that will be available in a few months.
The map has also received an update to clarify the Sea Area borders between the Caribbean and Atlantic (the connections are noted in blue at the bottom of page 2 of the Living Rules. I will post a file as soon as I have a final copy. This map will be the one that ships with the reprint.
As far as I know (but don't quote me on this), there will be spares of the rulebook and map available for separate purchase once the reprint boxes all ship. Neither is needed, though - the downloaded living rules and the map clarification on p. 2 is all you need.
The counters and cards are exactly as they were in the first printing. Should the game go into a second edition, we will consider any changes at that time. A few markers, for instance, that players have noted would be useful (or a few that aren't and could be replaced with others).
Many thanks to Allen Doum and Dave Klempa for help with the Living Rules, to Kevin for the Vassal module, and to Mark Mahaffey for the map update.

Fantastic! Thanks, Neil!
Now to pull out Blackbeard for another game... (not that the rules stopped me; just too many great games to play!)
Cheers, Merric

I've corrected an example of play error and uploaded the living rules file. Same URL.
Thanks.

Only two small items changes - both in examples of play. Much easier just to pencil them in.
Examples in 9.42 and 9.43.

I noticed another error, I'm afraid, Neil:
(10.35) second bullet point: "If the Pirate's total is lower than the Pirate total..."
Hmm.
I'm pretty sure that should read "If the Pirate's total is lower than the KC's total..."
Cheers, Merric

Current file on my site has the fix, Merric. Many thanks.
Brings up a point for all to note: I've rationalized the Warship and KC combat procedures - they're exactly the same now (Pirate needs HIGHER to win). The other way just produced too much cognitive overload for no real reason.

Well now that this is out, I'd like to thank you for doing this. I have read the living rules and now am adjusting my rating for the game from 3 to 7.5 for now..8 maybe later

Thanks again.

Neil,
I know you guys got flack from people on this site when the game was released that the rules had some problems and left some questions un-answered.
I just wanted to respond and say thank you so much for taking the time to rework the rules and create a PDF! I am really happy to have them and am equally happy with the game as well. It truly is a wonderful pirate game!

Yep - Soth is now South.
I toyed with the idea of misspelling America instead, just for fun, but in the end decided not to.

Kayaks do not have good cargo hold space. You need to upgrade it to a sloop at least or a brigantine. Happy boarding!

It seems to me that not all official changes made it into the new living rules. The official changes (dated June 2008 and which I got from consimworld) state:
6.46 (Addition) In any combat between a Pirate and a Warship, the Warship/AP Player immediately gains VPs equal to the Damage Hits incurred by the Pirate (see 6.46). Note: This means 1 VP automatically for the AP Player even if the Pirate wins.
I can't find this addition in the new Living Rules. There is also a similar change for fights between KCs and Pirates. Has it been left out deliberately or just forgotten?

We left it out deliberately. We felt the +2 DRM option for Warships and KCs, along with the KC Reaction rule, rendered it no longer all that useful.

So far the Living Rules seem to hit the mark very well. Not only do they play cleaner but most of the "play issues" are gone too (the +2 Warship / KC DRM is a very elegant way to put the combat power back where it belongs without throwing notoreity out of whack).

I downloaded the living rules the other day, as I have a new copy (A friend's, really) of the game, and I wanted to see the differences in the living doc and the printed one that came with it. There's no 2 player port grid? Is this an omission or a forgetful end result?
-
Neil Randall

-
It's an intentional omission - the rules ended up a page longer than before, so I needed to delete a page in order to fit it into the printing limit (booklets have to be in multiples of 8 pages for the printer).
The grids are available as PDF downloads on the GMT site, however.
