Is there any reason why I couldn't play this game on my 1" hex grid mat? It seems it would greatly cut back on measuring time without changing the game much.

Well, for one thing, flanking can take place if figures are 1/2 inch apart which you cannot do with the hex mat. Also, there may be problems with line of sight (it is 180 degrees to the front) and sometimes things don't line up easily with hexes. Finally, those incremental distances can be important to game play. With hexes you cannot get the same precision in movement and placement.

If the hexes are 1" you cant just place the figures half way out of the hex?
