Notwithstanding the 'pink-elephant-seen-in-Essen' theory, I have a less titillating idea to propose. October was Cancer Awareness Month for a very specific body part (or parts  ). Pink is the theme color for that kind of cancer awareness.
Just trying to keep you abreast of another possibility for the meaning behind...the pink elephant.
