The players: Paul, Tami, Jeremy, Eric
Everyone was in the middle of other games, so Paul and Tami fell on this Knizia trading game. I'm not sure why Res Publica appeals to me because after I finish playing, I inevitably feel that I didn't do much. When did I decide anything? Doesn't the randomness of the cards -- and the limited nature of trading -- prevent me from doing anything meaningful?
And yet that's not really true. I think the control is subtle, where you want to alternate being obvious about your needs and being crafty. Strangely, I formed the first settlement, which would seem to be an advantage since you draw more cards, but everyone else pulled far ahead of me by mid-game. I recovered at the end to roughly tie Jeremy and Tami, but Paul had a ten point advantage on us.
(I played the game again the following day with only three players and the same thing happened again: the first person with a settlement fell behind and only caught up near the end. A chance occurance, or something to keep in mind during future plays?)
