You can't go wrong with the Grandaddy of all turn based games - Civilization
There's also a recent re-release of the Colonization game that uses the same engine.

I will second Dominions 2/3, at least, until I can get Master of Magic running on Vista.

Age of Wonders and it's expansion Age of Wonders: Shadowmagic. They run really well on XP (and pretty good on Vista with only limited crashing) and can be run on a laptop.
There is a mod you can download that enhances it even more and makes it more like Master of Magic (my all time favorite game) http://aow2.heavengames.com/downloads/
look for Dwiggs_5.0 in Modpaks.
--------------- Older Heroes of Might and Magic are also good, number 3 being the best in my opinion...4 sucks, sucks, sucks, sucks & sucks...5 is not only a memory hog, but is a pain in the butt for video cards, unless you have the perfect set up (it does look really pretty though)
HOMM is also for XP and can be run on a laptop. ____________________________
Civilization Gold Edition is also good.

Master of Magic was the coolest of all turn-based games evah! Nobody has made anything as good since. I used to jump for joy whenever I got the hero Fang. He was a one man army, rampaging across entire continents.
I'd welcome any further suggestions too please.

I remember spending untold hours playing Master of Magic. That and Master of Orion 2, definitely.

Best ever! Where else can you build thermal boreholes? Or, planet bust a cluster of 5 cities? It makes me weep a little when I think about it.

Highly recommended is Heroes of Might and Magic III (available in the "Complete" edition for cheap). Great turn-based fantasy setting. Disciples II is also top notch. These play more like an advanced board game.
If you like 4x strategy games, I also suggest Master of Orion 2 for the space warfare thing OR if you prefer land go with Alpha Centauri. Aside from MOO2, there's Galactic Civilizations available as a download from Stardock, good stuff, but less space opera like than MOO2, but has other plus' going for it.
Civ IV is a great 4x strategy game if you like human history, not to mention there have been some excellent mods from for it, most noteable is the Fall from Heaven II mod that completely reworks the game into a deep fantasy setting.
There are some great business oriented titles also like Patrician III (hanseatic league trading type of thing).
Armageddon Empires ( http://www.crypticcomet.com/) is also a great TBS game that is like playing a boardgame on your pc. You have a 'deck' of cards (that you can build your own deck if you want to), that represents your forces. You play a card, and that unit pops up on the map. Have the unit capture resources to be able to play more cards, etc.
As an avid pcgamer, feel free to ask for particulars and I will help.

ps. I play only on a laptop, haven't owned a desktop in years.

Kohan: Ahriman's Gift.
It's nominally an RTS, however it encompasses a lot of TBS concepts and plays very much like a TBS game - fast-clicking is not required. In fact, once combat starts, you lose almost all control of your units (of which you can only have 20).

Age of Wonders-an often over looked and IMHO much better game than Heroes of Might and Magic series. AoW allows you to explore dungeons, conquer kingdoms and has a scenario editor! A Nice online community has created TONS of extra scenarios including a terrific War of the Rings scenario on a middle earth map.
If you are a fan of turn based fantasy games-AoW is a must own!

(The complete Civ4 series is only $25 @ http://store.steampowered.com/sub/393/; this price may end Jan 2nd)

Galactic Civilizations is a good one. You can also find Panzer General on abandonware sites somewhere. Railroad Tycoon (PC) was also released as freeware.

Here's another vote for the *Disciples* series. May seem mundane at first glance, but strategy and missions get complex. Get ready to devote some time to it though...ability to save mid-mission is a nice feature. Beautiful artwork as well.

Yep that was 12 Power Grid maps back to back over two days. Worth doing, but possibly not in such a concentrated burst.
Ooh yes, now a little to the left - my nose is itchy. No, no the other left! Now what colour is 12 supporter badge going to be I wonder?

Civ, Colonisation, MOO II, Alpha Centauri. All mentioned above and all great games. For speed and fun in the Civ series my personal favourite is Civ II.

Yes you can. After being introduced to the series by Civ 3, I went back and played the first one. I chose Babylon and squared off against several AI-controlled opponents, including China.
China had nuclear weapons before anybody else had gunpowder.
I saw little point in finishing the game.
Civ 4, on the other hand, is awesome. A huge improvement over the fun but seriously flawed Civ 3.
