Master of Orion 2. This is my all time favorite strategic turn-based game.

This. A thousand times, this.

This. A million times, this.

...but Master of Orion (1) is better.

You can always try sites like Steam, Gametap or GOG.com and search for what interests you. They have pretty extensive catalogues of quality games that will likely work on an older laptop (Good Old Games in particular).

What about something like Fallout Tactics?

There is a 20+ year old game called "Perfect General" that was a very generic war game but I really liked it. Another recommendation is a free turn based strategy game called "Clans of the Stone Age" that is really fun that can be played in the browser. Here is a link to the game http://www.strategyfestgames.com/PlayGame.html.

You can't go wrong with the Grandaddy of all turn based games - Civilization

There's also a recent re-release of the Colonization game that uses the same engine.

Also - Alpha Centauri.

Best ever! Where else can you build thermal boreholes? Or, planet bust a cluster of 5 cities? It makes me weep a little when I think about it.

+1 for Alpha Centauri

Agreed. I wish Alpha Centauri had a sequel... pretty much everything else Microprose/Firaxis made has had one... sigh... that, and a "real" sequel for Star Control II.

And I gotta make sure, you already know about Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire, yes?

Matrix games just put out a really nice Panzer General clone called Panzer Corps.

second that! I 'm a Panzer General 2 fan and i 've played most of the camps of the adlerkorps edition. The Panzer Corps is a fantastic job and the creators did respect the legacy of the Panzer General series.
