For those who think the game is a bit too long I have a simple variant :

Instead of the last part of the turn (struggling for a place to rest), just draw 3 parts in a black bag :
the first player will get the highest points.
The second will get the second and so on...

I hope you may understand my variant.

So what do you do when there are only 2 players or 4 or 5?

Another simple solution is to cut the number of rounds from five to four, or even three for a very quick game. This will make the treasure maps and the rendezvous tiles harder to complete, but I don't think the game should suffer much otherwise.
