I played Munchkin for the first time the other night. Yeah me! And even I understand that the whole concept of Munchkin is it's overabundancy of player interation (or argument resolvement depending on your group). But we had a card that caused quite a commotion and I was wanting to get a head up and see if this makes sense to anybody.
Card: Armor of Smugness
Txt: Ignore the effects of all Curses, Traps, Bad Stuff, and anything else that would change your Race, Class, or Sex.
I interpret this to say that while wearing this armor you are completely immune to having your Race, Class, or Sex changed. The consensus of the group, however, was that you are immune to ANY Curse, ANY Trap, and ANY Bad Stuff. Actually....I was voted 4 to 1 for being inaccurate. Is my grasp of english grammer that bad? Or can someone back me up here as being correct?
Thanks guys (and gals)! Game on!

I interpret this the same way you do. "Curses, Traps, Bad Stuff, and anything else" is the type of cards that you are immune to if and only if they change your Race, Class, or Sex.
The word else would need to be dropped for it to mean what your friends insist.

I interpret it the way you do.
ETA: Of course, if they convinced you to go with their interpretation, then that's part of the Munchkin nature of the game, isn't it?

Good point. LOL I'll just have to remember to tell them what small minded, goo eating, orc cross breeding munchkins they really are the next time I see them. Me speak good english. They bad.

Doesn't Munchkin have the rule that the owner of the game has the last word, or is that just the card game? Oh, and you are right, by the way...

While you are 100% correct, from a grammatical standpoint, it can go either way. English is not always the most clear and understandable language.

Yes, as game owner you got to make the final call, if my reading of the rules is correct. I don't even own this game yet but I remember and love that rule!

Semantically speaking the text could be interpreted in two ways:
1. That you ignore the effects of anything that might change your sex, race, or class.
2. That you ignore the effects of any curse, traps, or bad stuff, in addition to any other game mechanic that would be able to change your race, class, or sex.
The ambiguity results from whether or not the phrase "anything else" is by itself the fourth item in the list that starts: "Curses, Traps, Bad Stuff, and" or simply a modifier to the larger phrase "anything else that would change your Race, Class, or Sex."
I happen to think #2 applies, not due to any linguistic insight, but rather due to the fact that a +1 armor worth 600 gold ought to provide pretty powerful protections. Most other 600 gold armor is +3 or greater and simply protecting race/class/sex change effects doesn't seem sufficient to me to justify a value of 600 gold.

I interpret this to say that while wearing this armor you are completely immune to having your Race, Class, or Sex changed. YOU ARE CORRECT! The whole key to understanding this card is the word ELSE. If it was only a sequence of things you get immunity to it would say just "AND anything that," no ELSE necessary. but the "and anything ELSE" in the card is about being immune to ANYTHING (everything) (note the dangling) "THAT WOULD" change your Race, Class, or Sex.
Any Curse Any Traps Any Bad Stuff, and Anything Else THAT WOULD (...drum roll...) change your Race, Class, or Sex.
OMG - I can't believe I need to write that. I am sorry you needed to ask for that clarification. PS. I am as guilty of ignoring the first reply as everyone else.
