I was wondering if Dalmuti might be combined with Cheat or BS by playing cards face down? Any idea if that would work out well?

I don't know Cheat or BS, but in Dalmuti you need to play cards that top the previous cards played. If the previous cards are played face down, so that you don't know what they are, how would you even know what you could legally play to top them? I guess I could imagine that you show your proposed play to the player who made the previous play (but not to other players) and that previous player tells you if they're legal or not, and if not, you have to pass. That sounds more cumbersome, and not necessarily worth it to me.

Oh, people play cards face down - they may be lying or telling the truth about what those cards were. At any time before additional cards are played, any player may "challenge" the last cards played by revealing their true values. The loser of the challenge adds all cards from the discard into their hand. The winner of the challenge has the new lead.

I believe the idea is that the Dalmuti would say "I play three peasants," (12s) and plays three cards face down. The Lesser Dalmuti might say "three shephardesses," and also play three cards face down. The Greater Merchant passes. The Middle Merchant announces "three knights" (6s), and plays face down. The Lesser Merchant passes. The Lesser Peon says "three fives!" whereupon . . . um, well, maybe the Greater Peon says "I think you're lying!" the Lesser Peon has to reveal his play, and a penalty is assessed to whichever of the two of them turned out to be making the incorrect statement.

My thinking is, if you really want to play "BS" (aka Bull****), then play it. Grafting it onto Dalmuti wouldn't really be doing either game any favors.

Well, I was sorta thinking that The Great Dalmuti might solve some of the problems intrinsic in BS. One of the things that generally keep games like Cheat or BS from scaling to large groups is that there are too many people who may challenge the last card played, meaning that every play gets challenged and the game comes to a standstill thanks to one over-eager challenger handing someone else the victory. However, the Great Dalmuti has dynamic seating - perhaps the only people who may challenge your cards are your neighbors and the Great Dalmuti himself?

Now, in original BS this wouldn't work. If you're sitting next to an aggressive idiot, that person could hand you the game because they keep challenging you when you tell the truth. However, if winning moves you to new neighbors, that person is no longer around to hand you the victory.
