New game:
Player one lays one track segment out of chicago. Can the next player extend the line at either end, or just on the non chicago side. (Without a branch card.)

Just on the 'end', in this case away from chicago. (Without a branch card or being a short line.)

The Back Alley gets no respect.

Devin is right. Just think of the railhead. The crew is out there working in the fields way outside Chicago. They can't simultaneously start building hundreds of miles away. The branch card is essentially a new work crew.

One of the rules that makes it a challenging game.

In our playing of the game the first several times, we missed the fact that short lines could branch anytime, which made a difference.

We actually did this correctly, but I almost lost the argument.

This is one of those times that better components would have made a difference. If you actually had 4 "work crew" pieces for each major line, it'd make the rule perfectly clear.

Similarly, if the cards that must be played immediately were double sided, it'd make remembering that rule much easier.
