The rest of the rule reads "...or divide the moves among different pioneers," but that's not important. I don't understand what the first part of this statement means, because one paragraph before this one, the rules read: "You may move ... in a straight line, as far as you want." If you can move in a straight line as far as you want, how do you make several moves with the same pioneer?

OR (I think the light bulb just came on) does it mean that you can move one pioneer as your first action, then change directions and move that same pioneer as your second action?

Yes, exactly that. However, you may not move through a stone or another pioneer (yours or an opponent's). You also may not move the pioneer back to the spot on which it started at the beginning of your turn.

Yep, I got those two rules. It was just that one that gave me trouble.
