Squadron Report 8.5.09
Players, AP, Carl, Kurt and John H.

Mission #1- August 1918 Over the North Sea. Carl (Fokker DVII 185, 16/4 pilot) and Kurt (H-B W.29 0/0 crew) were patrolling the high waters just off the coast of the front when they ran into AP ( Camel 130, 11/2 pilot) and John H. (Camel 130, 0/0 pilot). The fight broke out and the Camels did their best to climb away from the 3 guns of the H-B and put hits into the Fokker. The Germans managed to put 4 engine hits into John’s Camel, but he was able to avoid a crit! Meanwhile AP tried to stay on Carl’s tail, and was able to give him a nasty tail crit and force him to flee with 3 points left in his tail… The experience pilot made it back to an efield, where he crashed his machine and was able to walk away.

Mission #2- November 1918 Western Front. AP and Kurt flew American SPAD XIIIs vs. Carl & John in Pfalz DXIIs. The battle started at 17,800 ft. with clouds looming above at 18,300. Lightheaded from lack of oxygen, all were anxious to attack and drive away the enemy. Early shots were traded by all with little effect, until unlucky turn rolls had Kurt move first followed by both Germans. John latched on his tail and Carl pursued via bottom attacks, giving Kurt a total of 4 engine hits and a crit to boot. AP started a conga line and tailed John, hoping to blow the enemy off his wing mates tail before the German could do him in. Kurt was 100ft below the clouds with his plane battered and torn, when alas, the 8th hit in his RW was a strut hit, reducing his climb by 50 and limiting him to a 50 max climb. With his straight speed cut by 10, & dive by 500, there was no where to run & hide. He made a valiant ‘straight’ effort for the clouds, only to be pummeled again, this time receiving a light wound from John to add to his suffering. The riddled SPAD was able to make the clouds and escape… his pursuers followed suit. AP escorted his wing mate ALL the way back to the front (game started 172 in German) ALL the way across the front (50+) and ALL the way to the efield (another 150+ squares!) Kurt’s pilot was bleeding badly, but managed to stay awake for the whole trip back to his e-field. With his mates cheering him on from the ground he set up to land, he could see the ambulance truck coming…when all suddenly went black. The SPAD crumpled into the ground in a rough wing set-down, the pilot asleep for good…

Mission #3- March 1918 Western Front deep in German territory. Carl and John were patrolling in Sopwith Camels, when above them they spotted John (Albatross DIII, 24/3 pilot) and AP (Fokker Dr. 1, 18/6 pilot). The Albatross could not win an initiative roll, and despite starting the game 600 ft above the Brits at high altitude, it only took a couple of turns for the Camels to climb up to him. AP attempted to get on and stay on the tail of both Camels with no luck, and eventually the Germans caught a break and had the chance to dive for the clouds. John was hesitant, claiming he hadn’t been shot up too badly & only had a jammed gun, when AP reminded him of the familiar mantra…’when in an Alb, ANYTIME you have the chance to get away from camels, take that chance and run!!’
