In the photos, it looks like only the octopus pieces have the details of the animal drawn on. Is that the case? The original game had the details only on one side, so I'm not sure if I'm just seeing the backsides in the photos, or if the squirrel, goose, and tiger are plain pieces with no details. Anybody know?

My sets and those I have seen (I have two sets and have played with a third) have detailing only on the octopus. The other pieces are just plain colored wooden pieces. Since I have seen a few sets, I am assuming that this is the standard and not just a mix up at the wood-works.
